newbie installing p4

I'm gonna be putting a p4 2.26 ghz 533 fsb in a gigabyte Gigabyte GA-8IHXP Tehama-E 850E/ICH4 with 512 mbytes of kingston 1066mhz 32ns rdram. How about some tips on installation . Like if i should just follow the intel manual and simply snap in the processor, heatsink, and fan or if i should use special things like thermal grease or whatever else to make it cool better . Is the retail heatsink and fan good or should i consider getting better ones? I have a lian li aluminum case with fans on hi and my room is a/c a lot of the time so that should help a bit . I was thinking about trying to oc it anywhere from 2.3 to 3.0 ghz . I dont know anythign about oc'ing how can i get started ? When trying to oc Im afraid of like frying my processor/mobo/ram/ whatever else, how much risk is there of fryign something ? I definitely wouldnt want to plunk down another $250 because i fried the p4 while trying to oc it.

If you want to overclock it, you might want to start with a CPU that runs on the 400MHz bus so that the jump to 533 is a natural first step in the OC process, and then try taking it up from there. If you want to hit 3GHz then something like an Alpha PAL8924 or Swiftech MCX4000 with a mid-to-high-output fan and Arctic Silver 3 is probably going to be a worthwhile investment. Or wait a while for the 2.8GHz CPU to come out, I suppose...

edit: the P4 is supposed to be pretty fry-resistant, check out this interesting 1-page article: http://www.overclockers.com/articles517/

I might not have advised correctly anyway, since I don't know the details of OC'ing with the PC1066. Still, if you're looking to maximize your overclock, some Arctic Silver 3 and a high-end heatsink could be worth it. Are you going to start with the stock ones and see what they can do, or are you looking for a place to order more goodies? Vendor list

I have the GA-8IHXP and it has preset fsb values and the highest is 156. So the highest oc you could do is 2652 (156 fsb x 17) which is very hard unless you have some pretty good cooling and you get a good processor. You also would have to increase the voltage to the cpu a good amount. Its pretty hard to burn a p4 unless your're being stupid because throttling kicks in at 67° C. The stock cooler is fine, but since if you want to oc, scrape off that thermal pad on the bottom of the stock cooler and put some arctic silver 3 on it and the processor. You could always go with another heatsink and fan like the alpha pal8924 (doesn't come with fan but you can get one, any 80mm fan will do) or the thermaltake volcano 7+. For installation w/ the stock cooler just follow the instuctions in the manual. For the arctic silver there are instructions at the company's web site (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm).
