Newbie DSL/Router/Network questions

ok finnaly getting DSL after a long time on dial up...just looking for some general advice/links/info on some of this stuff.
(DSL should be activated on tues or weds)

some info:
router is: Linksys network everywhere Cable/DSL 4 port router (model nr041)
one system has xp pro, other 98 se.....network already works fine between the 2 systems but the router hasn't been connected to the internet.

Basically I want to know about making the connection somewhat secure, and any way to increase connection performace on the XP system, and if i can limit bandwidth to a certain amount on the 98se system, and if there is anything else I should know.

A software firewall is a good step toward security.
Visit dslreports and check out the various connection tweaking ideas and utilities, to optimize the xp connection.
Some ideas on functionally limiting bandwidth.
