Newbie comp builder -- help with cooling

Hey all

i'm planning on building a system with either a duron 850 or an athlon 950. but when it comes to cooling...i know nothing 🙁
i'm planning on overclocking which ever one i get...the duron to 950 mhz and the athlon to 1.0+ ghz.
so what will i need? is a heat sink a must? or will just a fan do?
below are links to the two fans i'm thinking of buying. both are rated for durons and athlon up to 1.1ghz for the chrome orb and 1.5ghz for the super orb.

Chrome Orb

Super Orb

will just using these fans do? or do i need a heatsink...and then put the fan on top?
i understand that when u buy cpu's retail (in the box) they come with a heatsink. will this heatsink be fine?

thx all

Yes you need a heat sink!! If you look at the picture of the super orb, the shiny silver bit is the heat sink, the black things are the fans.
You wil also need to get some heat transfer compound to put between the processor and the heat sink, get artic silver, its highly recomended and i dont think there is a singe person(except me) in here who doesnt use it!

The orb your thinking of bying is a heatsink(with fans) so itl replace the retail heatsink+fan on the cpu.

Any more questions feel fre to ask!

Oh yeh b careful mounting the heatsink on the cpu, iv heard all sorts of horror stories about cracking the core and so on..

I would recommend a GlobalWin FOP32-1. Go to www.2cooltek.com, then go to there store. Look under the Socket-A section. Just about any fan/HSF in there will be more than adequate, even for overclocking. Look at the GlobalWins (FOP32-1) and Alphas (PAL 6035). I would stay away from the Orbs (SuperOrb & ChromeOrb), people have trouble getting them on, and sometimes cracking your CPU. And also ArcticSilver is pretty expensive, its the best stuff though. But I think if you order either the Alpha or the GlobalWin, it comes with Thermal Compound, which is good, and ALOT cheaper.

Just me 2 cents 🙂

Hope that helped! And Good Luck!
