Newbie car audio question: What the heck are "component" speakers?

Can't seem to find the answer on Google...

I'm buying stuff for a 1986 Honda Accord DX hatchback. I just bought a Rockford Fosgate RFX8220 off of my roommate for $100, now I need some speakers to go with it. I'm using Crutchfield to find model numbers & intend to buy off of ebay.

Any help/suggestions? Sites to read up at?

Viper GTS

Midrange, tweeter, and a crossover

Some will come with a midbass speaker, midrange, tweeter, and crossover

edit: I used to own the midlevel Rockford component set. Hated it.

Anything special needed to drive them?

Depending on the set you buy, you may need an amp.

From the looks of my car it would appear that at some point an amp/sub/who knows what else was installed, there is a bundle of wires in the back that are most definitely not stock. Presuming the wiring is all intact, what would I need (components) to do a very basic (read: budget) but decent sounding system?

You shouldn't need an amp if you get a nice HU (check some Alpines).

However you're probably gonna need to have yoru side panel drilled to fit the tweeter.

Do you have any idea what those wires are?

The cheapest way, presuming you have a decent head unit would be to simply find a way to make the components fit and run speaker wire to them. You should be able to use the existing wire to hook everything up.

Head unit-> crossover -> tweeter and midrange

if you decide on using crossovers, note that there are high-range crossovers and low-range crossovers. mixing them up could break your speakers. the high-range ones filter out bass so your tweeters can concentrate on highs, and low-range ones filter out highs so your subs can concentrate on bass.

Generally component speaker setups are a lot more power hungry.

I've got two sets of MB Quart component speaker sets in the front of my 12 year old Dakota. One set with a 5 1/4" woofer being driven by a 40 watt Orion amp and a 6 1/2" set being driven by a 75 watt Orion amp.

I've gotta get a sub(I've got a 300 watt amp and active cross-over just sitting around).

I've got a whole system just sitting around in a closet.

3 amps, cap, active crossover, 3 woofers, component set, and all the wires and rca cables you'd need

🙁

Want to ship?

Component speakers are individual speakers.
1 tweeter, 1 midbass
or
1 tweeter, 1 midrange, 1 midbass

Most all of what you buy is a 2 set.
Coax is the same thing, except mounted all in one nice speaker (Think 6x9....)

Crossover shouldnt be something you worry about unless your doing a custom component set which I wouldnt recommend. Like 99.9% of all components come with the crossover so your set there. I also wouldnt recommend going active either, since it sounds like you just want a KISS approach. Active isnt as easy as passive so why bother? The included passive for the set you buy will be optimally matched for your set.

components are better. 🙂 you want a stereo image not aimed at the back of your head or from your feet😛 and for a given size, the components will surely be better then the equiv size coaxials. you give up something cramming it all together.

I thought at placing speakers at your feet in kick panels were the best acoustics for car audio. (the speakers are mounted on floor, but point to your ears.)
