Newbie can't overclock past 2.6ghz on Abit Ip-35e

I'm new to the whole overclocking thing but I feel its the best way to get the bang for your buck. I have an Abit Ip-35e motherboard with an Intel e6420 that I can't overclock past 2.6ghz. When ever I push higher the computer just sits and beeps at me and wont boot or anything. Then I have to reset the motherboard. I would really like to achieve around 3.0 ghz for most games. Not real sure what my ram is cause my bro bought it for me, but I'm assuming its the fastest the motherboard can handle. Which is 2 gig of 800 mhz.

And when I run at 2.6 it hangs after about 15 mins but the temp gets no hotter then 50 c, but I'm guessing thats lack of the core voltage which I haven't messed with to much. I've looked every where and I haven't seen anybody getting any problems like this. Please help me out thanks

Basically you should:
1. make FSB 1333
2. Change memory multiplier to 800 ili 667
3. Make CPU voltage to up to 1,35v
4. Fix the PCIE clock to 100 mhz

That works with most setups.

I'd almost bet you didn't set your DDR2 ratio to 1:1. You want your FSB to be in sync with your memory until you find the max FSB your CPU can handle with safe voltage and temps.

yes i played with the ip35e and ip35pro and they are fantastic boards. it should be pretty simple to get you there. if you have a chip that plays well, you should be able to do 333x8 with very little extra vcore. like brencat mentioned, make sure you use 1:1 on your ram first before you start playing with the dividers. makes life a whole lot easier. heh. might need a small bump to your nb stuff is about it.

Alright thanks guys yeah I figured it out. What was throwing me off was the 1:1 ratio I knew how to do it I just didn't know where it was located. But when I went through my last reset it was automatically ummarked for me and that pinpointed it. So far I have it running at 3.3 ghz solid at a temperature between 60-70 Celsius. With the memory at about 10 mhz over. Is that acceptable? or should I back it down? And I was just curious about how much can you overclock memory thanks.

Don't worry, the memory is fine. 10mhz don't mean anything special. But is you CPU idling @ 60-70c or is it under load? It looks very hot if it's idling.

No thats underload it wont get any hotter then 75 at the max so thats the most I'm going to get out of it. And that was for hours. Also I like to do alot with programs such as udk and rendering software so I was thinking of getting an intel extreme 9650 quad, and I was wondering if these are good cpus. Plus how oc friendly they are.
