Hi guys

I have just finished my 1st rig build. Every thing went together as expected and I was just starting to move files and programs etc on board. Because windows kept reminding me to activate, I decided to set up my broadband. I have a choice of using Ethernet or USB to connect. I simply disconnected the Ethernet cable from my old rig and plugged into 1 of the 2 ethernet sockets. It lit up and then went out but I had no connection so I plugged into the other socket which again lit up and then went out. Still no joy so I tried The USB option?still no joy.

When I next rebooted I got a BIOS error saying the LAN cable was not connected correctly but it wasn?t in, was it? The outcome of all this is my realisation that when had plugged the Ethernet and USB cables in, the cable modem was still live! Have I fried this part of my board because now whenever I boot, the error message is always there. Rest of the rig is still working perfectly.

It doesn't matter if the line is live when you're plugging in an ethernet line to a device. I disconnect live ethernet lines from routers, switches and computers all the time. And I would never use USB instead of ethernet for a broadband device.

I'm assuming you made sure you installed drivers for both ethernet ports. One is from Marvell I believe and the other is from nVidia. You will need drivers for each from their respective companies.

When you say "lit up and then went out" I'm assuming that when you plugged the ethernet cablee into the back of your new rig the ethernet port light on the rig lit up briefly then went out? If so that would indicate maybe a bad ethernet cable. The thing to make sure is that the ethernet line is working properly and not faulty. You can do this by plugging it into your old computer and seeing if it works. If you have another ethernet line, try that as well and see if it solves the problem.

Try cycling the power to everything down, checking all cables to make sure they're properly connected, and then powering everything up again.
