I am looking to build an HTPC, the goal is to replace my aging DVD player and my receiver. How can I go about creating an HTPC that will work as a receiver.

How can I go about doing this?

I assume you mean AUDIO receiver. Your HTPC can play to PC speakers, which generally have built-in amplifiers. Should you wish to play thru conventional home audio speakers you will need and external AV Receiver or amp to drive them. The audio output from a computer is insufficient to drive speakers directly.

Good luck with your project. I think you will find it is a bit more complex and frustrating than you might imagine, assuming you wish to use the HTPC for TV, Video and music. You might want to spend some time reading at AVS Forums in the HTPC section to see what you are getting into. Not trying to discourage but like most computer related activities it is not always simple to achieve your goal.

well ok a few q's

first you want to replace your old dvd player meaning you want to go hd?
does your tv support 720+ ?
does your tv have hdmi?

and last is what do you want your htpc to do?

for me all I needed was a media center for music, movies and a basic pvr
so I dont need a high end system (rig is in my sig)
my basic system can push out 720p without a problem (just to give you a idea)

most new mb's come with really good onboard sound these days
so you can just hook it up directly with either a headphone jack to rca (or what I did was use headphone jack to headphone jack and connect it to my tv, then tv back to my reciever)
