Newb RAM Questions

I've always been confused by all the different RAM speeds. I'm looking to get a Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 and I'm trying to get a ball park idea of the $ involved but I can't figure out what RAM i need.

Before I ask what I need, could some1 explain to me why there are so many diff speeds?? Are the higher speeds purely for overclocking overhead? Given a certain CPU & Mobo, how do I determine what speed RAM I need to get? Is it mostly dictated by the Mobo or the CPU (given that the CPU will work w/ the mobo)?

I guess for my specific Intel 6600, I think I need PC2-4200 -is that correct? (I have no intentions to OC). Why would any1 get PC2-3200? Wouldn't that create a bottleneck for the CPU?

Lastly, if I want a 4GB system (with no plans to upgrade in future), does it make a diff if I get 2 x 2GB or 4 x 1GB in terms of performance? It seems like 4 x 1GB is the cheaper route..

Thanks! Sorry for the newB questions..

Just get the PC4200. Thats all the CPU requires. YOu only need the faster stuff if you plan to overclocck. I use 2 X 1 gig of value ram and my system runs like a champ.

And i think it makes a very insignificant difference if you choose 4 X 1 over 2 X 1. Basically you would not notice the difference.
