Newb questions about IDE cables

Mloot

Ok, the mobo I bought came with one of those double-headed IDE cables. Going into the system will be a Maxtor ATA 160gb drive, along with a single DVD burner.

Now, are the dual heads on the IDE cable meant for connecting two IDE HDD's, or can it be used to connect the one HDD and DVD burner?

Do I need a separate IDE cable for the DVD burner?

Last question: Are the dual heads on the IDE cable used for connecting two of the same device, with one as the master drive and one as the slave drive?

TIA.

You can hook them both up to 1 Cable...just make sure you have the right end and jumper connected to the devices correctly (should be marked or color coded)

either way, but if you are only using one cable in your system then you will have to set your hdd on the master connector.

you can connect a hdd and dvd or cdrom or 2 hdd, I have a dvd burner that I use a separate channel and it is set to seconday master, then I have a hdd for storage on the same ide channel set secondary slave. On my primary, I have a hdd with os files, etc...

hope this helps.

They connect two IDE devices. Period. If it plugs into that cable, it will work. And with most newer controllers, they each work at their own DMA mode, so you don't lose any real performance anymore by using 1 cable.

If you're going to have one Hard drive and one DVD burner, this is your best way of setting them up:

Primary IDE: Connect the Hard drive as master. You can add another drive as slave later if you need to.

Secondary IDE: Connect the DVD burner as master drive.

You'll need 2 IDE cables, which will both have a 'head' unused. By doing this, you're putting each of your drives on a separate channel, preventing bottlenecks and thereby improving performance.
