My mechanic changes our oil with our 98 corolla and civic with 10w-30 oil. ( i would do it myself but he is family and pretty much does it at cost)

Anyway with the 98 corolla if we don't make it back withing 3-4k miles it gradually starts to burn or leak oil. We have a few bottles of 10-40 oil of a different brand. Is it OK if we add the 10-40 oil to the existing oil (10-30) just to keep the oil at an acceptable level until we get it changed again? It is a different weight and brand of what my mechanic uses.

Thats not a problem either

Correct.

10w-40 is OK to top off with, but there's really no reason to use it over 5w-30 either.

It doesn't matter. Half 10w-30 and half 10w-40 would create something like 10w-35.
