Newb Question: How do I overclock?

Supposely the 1700+ XP can overclock very well compared to other XP+ processors. I don't know much about overclocking, besides that you have to raise your FSB higher. How do I go about overclocking this to its full potential?

Memory I'm using are 3 x 256MB PC2100 (2 x Crucial, 1 x Kingston) and motherboard Asus A7N8X Deluxe (Rev. 1.04).

You are going to have a slightly tough time with much thanks to your memory. It is of course very possible but with that memmory you will need to relax the timings n your memory and overvolt it just to be able to use a moderatly good ratio between your memory and fsb.

EDIT: let me see if I can put that into English:

Your CPU has a FSB of 133. Your ram runs at 133. You shoudl be able to get your cpu at least as high as 200mhz. Your ram on the other hand will not make it above about 150 if you add more voltage and slow down all yout timings. So you will have to use a different ratio which is in there. I believe it comes in percentages on that mobo so you will have to take that back from 100 to about 80%. Then you can just slowly crank up your FSB a few Mhz ata time very slowly. When it no longer want to boot into windows you just give it a little more voltge and see if it will boot into windows. If so repeat until you are happy with how fast it is going. If not you may have to crank up the volts just a little more. The same goes for your ram if it seems to be teh problem and not the cpu then give it a little more voltage. Sweat spots for teh cpu is usually around 1.8 volts and about 2.8 volts for the ram to get a really nice overclock.

Make sure you have adequate cooling. The stock HSF will not get you above 200mhz and it will run hot at 200. Always remember though the HSF wil only work if it has cool enough air to transfer the heat to so if you have an slk900U with a 120mm fan adn your case is not cooled well enough it won't work much better than the stock.

First, download CPU-Z to find out what core your CPU is. It's either a Thoroughbred A or B. A is bad for overclocking, B is very, very good. If you seriously want to overclock to the chip's fullest potential (assuming it's a B core) you should pick up some PC3200 memory.

There are three XP1700+ variants.
DMT3C is a Palomino - pretty much junk.
DUT3C is a decent Tbred, perhaps good for 2.2Ghz with high Vcore and high temps.
DLT3C is one of the low-Vcore wonder-chip overclockers capable of 1GHz overclock, assuming decent system components.

Your overclocking potential depends on what XP1700+ variant you have.

Your ram is almost certainly going to limit your overclock potential.
