Newb question about LCD HD TVs

This is in regards to a product like this.

I want to buy one for my parents for Christmas, and I have no clue about these things. All my parents like to do is watch VHS tapes (through a VCR of course), but they want a flat panel TV because space is an issue.

Does an LCD HD TV support ancient technology like a VCR? Being a widescreen LCD, will the VHS image stretch, or will there be black bars on the sides?

Thanks, in advance for any help 🙂

Check how they would connect the VCR. If the only connection option is Coaxial RF, then you would need to purchase an LCD with a tuner. Otherwise, there should not be an issue hooking it up.

Each tv is different in it's 4:3 aspect ratio display options. Usually you can choose to have it stretch and fill the whole screen, or have it display letterboxed (bars on the side).

They do indeed connect the VCR with a Coaxial connection, but I think there are RCA connectors on the back of the VCR too.

Just in case they only have a Coaxial connection, what do you mean by "an LCD with a tuner". Do you mean an HD tuner?

Even the VCR my own parents have from long long ago has composite video output. You should be fine hooking up that way. (Not that it's going to look very good, but there's not much you can do about that 😉)

Since you have the RCA connectors, use that to hook it up and you should not have any issues. The picture will not be great, but since it is a VHS source that cannot be expected anyways.
