Newb Pic editing help

For example, lets use this pic as an example. Ok, the background of the image is white, which I don't want, I just want the outline of the bobcat. Is there a tool that will select the outline of the pic automatically. or do I have to use a free hand tool?

At school I can get access to Fireworks, Paint shop pro and photoshop.

+Note, its hard to see since the backdrop is also white, but if you right click and save the pic, you will see that the image is a square.+

I'm assuming you want to embed it in a webpage or something - use the magic wand tool in PS, then copy & paste into a new document, delete the background layer.

You go to OU? My cousin just graduated a month ago from there. I was there last halloween 😀

Anyways... You will have to freehand that one. The shadows are gradual, so it slowly transitions into white, from grey, black and cat head color. That image was created using a white background, so there is pretty much nothing you can do to make it using a black background.

If you have to, you CAN use the Magic Wand and paste it onto a black background, but you will have to use an airbrush or eraser tool to get rid of the white edges around it. In other words, it will take a lot of work.

Not quite. You select the white area with the magic wand tool, then select inverse. Put the selected area on a new layer and shut off the old one. Then save for web, make sure you are saving it with trasparency, and select your matte color. For example, if you are putting on a black background, make your matte black, etc. etc.

Huh? Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think that is any different than just selecting it and pasting it. (I know I forgot to mention to select inverse. But what does selecting matte as black, and setting it to transparency do for it? I keep playing with it, but I don't see a difference. You still get the white border crap.

I don't know what your setting/preferences are.
Here it is with a black matte.
You can slap that on a black BG and no white will show up. I wasn't careful with this one, my settings were off for this kind of image. I'm just showing you waht the matte does. It makes the fades fade toward the color of the matte pretty much. I do graphics for a living, this is just the way I would do it. There are probably other ways.

Aight, think I figured it out. I just wasn't saving it all the way first. The preview looked the same, but when you view the Gif after you save it and re-open it, the matte showed up. I also had my magic wand tolerence set to 10 😀

I wouldn't know how to do it in Paintshop Pro being that I never used the program. 🙂
