You have to wear a mask, and I like to wear gloves, but I think the pain is overrated. Everybody was always telling me how much it hurts b4 I started but its really not bad.
The 98 custom is not that much longer than a Spyder or Pirhanna so don't worry about that.

depends on how you've got that model 98 rigged up. you drop a flatline on there and a 12 ounce tank off the back and i would love to see someone play a round of speedball with that

I consider the Tippmann 98 Custom to be one of the best beginners guns, affordable, upgradable and tough!

yea.. if you want a gun that is 3 feet long 😛

imo, automags are the best beginner gun you can find, and if you decide to follow the game further you'll have an awsome gun with a wide variety of mods that can be done to it. second up would be a spyder, small, lightweight, lots of parts are available, easy to maintain, affordable.

if your looking to buy online, and dont' mind used, try the FS/FT forum here... or ebay, i picked up my first mag off of ebay, came with a ton of goodies and it was a damn good price. new online, the only place i ever buy from is www.paintballgear.com
More like 2 😛

Yes it hurts, and you can buy some protection, although a 300 fps paintball will only break skin if it hits bare skin. And I highly un-suggest buying an automag as a first gun. A tippmann 98 is like an AK-47, it's so freaking durable and reliable.

you should NEVER be playing paintball are 300fps. Indoors, its usually between 220-240, and outdoors max should be 280. Any higher and you are liable to hurt somebody. Paintball is safe as long as it played safely (duh!!).

I actually still have a couple of scars from when I played paintball a couple years ago. I was trying to bunker somebody but I got hit a couple times near the stomach that bruised and then left scars. It was definately worth it though, paintball is alot of fun but too expensive. I ended up spending $50+/time playing and my gun + tank setup ran about $1300.

220? The lowest I've ever heard was in the 260-270 range. The established limit for paintball is 300 fps. It's safe to play at this speed. Anything higher and bones can actually break. For obvious reasons, most people recommend 280 and under.

By the way, where are you at? Where do you plan on playing?

we're in st. cloud MN, its about an hour north of Minneapolis

I live in a pretty woodsey area, so we could probably actually play just around my house. We certainly wouldnt need to pay to play anywhere.

I played paintball for the first time last week. Going in, I was pretty scared of getting hit, but you get used to it. Obviously, get a mask. I've heard about stupid kids dicking around and one got shot in the face and he wasn't wearing his mask. His contacts somehow shattered and got embedded into his eyeball and needed surgery. Although I've never had that happen to me, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that wouldn't be fun. Yeah...

The other parts of the body that hurt are your family jewels, neck, and hands. Maybe get a cup? I don't know about neck protection; and do get gloves. I got shot between my index and middle finger knuckles - it hurt and I was bleeding a little. Now I have little scabs scattered all over the spot that was hit. I also got a bruise on my left butt cheek which hurts whenever I sit down. But it was fun and I would do it again.

So other than a mask, probably gloves, you don't really need anything else. Although if you're playing in a wooded area, get cameos with a hood, it's extremely hard to spot if you're standing still. I came 10 feet from a guy who lied perfectly still and was wearing hooded cameos, I only saw him after he shot me.

Tippmann 98 Custom.
EDIT: As usual, I posted to a thread which I commented on a while ago. 😛
I finally sold that Tippmann, BTW.

You can get shorts with soft padding in the groin area if your scared of getting hit there, its more comfortable than a cup.

As for a newb gun, I suggest a mag if you've got the cash, or the new pirahna 2k3 models.. yes pirahnas have had a bad rap but the new 2k3 models are brand new (very little parts from previous versions) and are awesome. You can get a great package at pbgear: http://store.yahoo.com/actionvillage/010-5073.html 200 bux gets you a great (looks good too) gun with all the equipment you need. A little over your budget but well worth it. And PMI has some of the best customer service in the industry, not as good as airgun (I can lookup the president of the company and ask him a question directly if I wanted to), but both should give you lots of great paintballing experiences.

As for getting hurt, it doesnt really hurt that bad, 300 fps is the standard with many fields make you stay under (although its tough to enforce) if you wear two shirts and get hit from far away (25+ yards) it doesnt hurt that much (like a hard pinch), and ALWAYS wear your mask around live guns or fields and PUT YOUR BARREL PLUG IN when your gun is not in use. I've seen many close calls with some idiot accidently pulling his trigger or something with a whole group around him and no barrel plug. There is no excuse and you can cause someone to go blind.

Whoa this is getting long, anyway when is there gonna be another SoCAL Paintball meet? I finally upgraded my mag so I'd like to play! Who ran it last time, should we start a thread? July 5, 12, or 19?
