Hi, hope you can help. I have an Athlon XP 2700+ chip which runs at a FSB of 166. I realized while I was trying to secure my heatsink that I had put on too much thermal paste. I took off the heatsink and cleaned off as much as I could with a paper towel. After setting it up I had some power glitches, which was likely due to the psu that came with my case, which I replaced. I was also noticing that the cpu was running at half-speed and XP Home sp2(this is an OEM version) was freezing at times during boot up, all of which I thought was also a problem with the psu but it turned out not to. So I took apart my computer again, cleaned up the paste I put on, using rubbing alcohol, paper towel, and a credit card, and reapplied. I also saw on a site that if I increased my fsb in the bios (my board is a Shuttle an35n ultra and it was showing that my fsb was 100. Shouldn't the board be able to detect the fsb of the chip?) I should get the cpu up to its max clock speed. So I tried this when I saw the cpu was still slow and when I rebooted it, I got a boot error that starts like "We're sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows XP did not start successfully, and gave me the option to go to safe mode, restore last configuration, or start windows, all of which rebooted the computer and gave me the same screen. I reset the fsb to 100 and windows starts as normal. Is there a way around this or do I need a new cpu? Thanks!
