Newb here, raspbmc, ssh and the advancedsettings.xml

I just got a raspberry pi and I've loaded the latest version of raspbmc on it.

I'm trying to tweak the system for best performance and I ran into this guide:
http://www.htpcbeginner.com/fix-raspberry-pi-xbmc-buffering-issues/

I'm a newb when it comes to Linux or using the command line. I can ssh into the pi just fine and I figured I needed to be root so I've got that.

So my questions are:
1) where do I find the advancedsettings.xml (I've read that later versions of xbmc don't have this file)?

2) if I don't have the file, how do I create it? The guide says to use nano, so I did and I added the necessary text but I have no idea how to save the file.

3) are there any other ways to access/create this file from within xbmc?
