New Youtube 5.0 app! Redesigned!

So just one thing I'd like to point out is that I love the new slide out navigation. You can slide out from the middle of the page. It makes it a LOT easier so I don't have to try to slide from the edge which could screw up my screen protector.

My major complaint with Hangouts and Gmail is that you have to slide damn close to the edge of the screen to bring out the menu. Otherwise you risk accidentally swiping away a conversation/email. Now for Google+ I don't get why they couldn't do this.

Edit: The other play apps also have an annoying slide out menu. Swiping from the middle of the page would be much better!

I vote for pull for refresh :) screw the refresh button. I don't know why they have to do "slide to refresh" though. Are they afraid of a lawsuit?

I don't care how it refreshes. I just want a way to refresh.

What is this "slide to refresh"? Something I'm missing? I have to kill YouTube and restart it to get an updated video list.

Gmail has a slide down to refresh functionality. That's cool, but why not just use the "pull" to refresh where the list actually acts like its being pulled down (e.g Twitter, Facebook, and iOS). It's a more intuitive feeling and makes it very clear to the user that the list is being refreshed. Google+ just introduced this refresh ability a few days ago.

I get it that Youtube lacks refresh, but just playing devil's advocate here, they probably see that there's less of a reason for refresh here because you're not dealing with an incoming stream like Facebook or Gmail.

I think someone patented pull to refresh. Didn't YouTube used to have it in Android and then it got removed at some point? Though it's weird that YouTube on iOS still has pull to refresh.

Google+ has a refresh button.
Gmail has pull down to refresh.
YouTube has nothing.

So at least they are consistently inconsistent. :)

Why would anyone want a refresh pull on the YouTube app? To see if anyone uploaded a new video of your search since you last searched? I am puzzled. If there is a slide to refresh feature in YouTube it would drive me nuts because there is no need for refresh.

Different apps with different features for different uses should not all be designed identically. There is consistency in Google apps already. There is no pleasing everyone.

It's not for searches. I have 100+ channels in my subscription list. When I go to my subscriptions I can see the current videos, however if I go back half an hour later and want to check out some newer stuff that was added, it won't show up on my Android YouTube app, because it doesn't refresh (I can see the newer videos in my subscriptions on the PC).

Sometimes if I leave the Subscription list and go somewhere else, like "What to watch" and then come back to the subscriptions, it'll refresh. But that only works if it's been a while since my subscription list was updated. I'm not sure what the time interval is for the update to occur, but I have no way of forcing it to immediately update when I know there are new videos. Except to kills the YouTube app.

Speaking of "What to watch". I'd like to see this feature not suck someday. Not sure why my "what to watch" list is comprised almost entirely of videos that are several months old and probably half of which I've already watched and the other half so outdated I don't care.

Google knows what I watched, so I don't get why this section is so bad. I'd like to see this only show stuff posted within the last few days and not include content that I'm already subscribed to or watched.

eff yeah.

The old app selected the highest resolution video. That is good and all but my tablet with it's shitty IO performance couldn't read the buffer fast enough to play more than a few seconds and then buffer for a few seconds (longer period of time than it played), repeat. Any videos produced in HD were unwatchable on my (top of the line in 2012 by some accounts) Transformer Infinity TF700.

Old videos were not recorded in HD so they would play just fine. New videos in HD still playback like shit but this app finally now lets you select low definition. Thank you Google, eff you Asus.

I really like that you can detach a video and continue searching while it plays. That's pretty neat.

I wish instead of making their good apps better they'd instead invest some time into making their absolutely horrendous apps (Google Play, anyone?) into something that's not a fiery piece of shit.

Who cares? How does it affect you? If you don't want a refresh button, then don't use it. Does having one hurt you? Moreover, a pull to refresh doesn't even influence your use everyday unless you're saying you do so many swipes on the Youtube app that it would interfere.

I think these are proposals that only help and if it doesn't matter to you, it shouldn't influence your use negatively.

The UI of new YouTube app is the best it ever had.
The best thing for me is that you can navigate while video is playing, bring it back up by dragging or tapping the small window and dismiss it by swiping sideways.

The gestures are great. I love it.

The new icon had me staring at my launcher for 30 seconds trying to find the app. :p
The icon looks a bit too generic now.

The new YouTube app is amazing on the iPad. The only thing that's missing now is a video quality control.

That's really odd. Pull to refresh is almost everywhere on iOS. I'm not sure if its patented. I think it was created by a developer that made a twitter app. I forget his name.

I like being able to drag the video down and search while it plays in the corner. Reminds me of floating apps which are awesome.

I thought the HD toggle was gone but they moved it to the menu options.

Seriously, what is wrong with your brain? Do you get off arguing with people on the internet for fun? You like pretending you know more than everyone else? What makes you think your complaints are God-Sent and warrants its own thread? No, I am not actually asking for your comment either, so you can save your time, don't write an essay blabbing.

No, I'm saying that one user had an opinion of a refresh. You dismissed it saying that it would drive you nuts. My point was does the refresh button actually hurt you? If it were added, it would help users. I'm not crying for one, but it wouldn't hurt me. It's a welcome improvement.

Anyway, more praise for this app. In app search actually works via the search button. I feel like this team is different from the other mobile teams. Not sure why Google+ can't handle in-app search.

I don't mind swiping down to refresh or using some other gesture, but adding an extra button that I probably would never use and would permanently sit there is cluttering the screen.

There's an action bar and a menu button. Hiding the refresh in the menu button wouldn't hurt anyone and would only help those who need it.
