New Yorkers (state&city)- How do I get to Lake Placid?

I need to be there on Sept 13th for the last Skeleton try-outs for the season.

If I drive, MapQuest says it is 770 miles. I guess I could drive thursday, sleep in the truck, and find a hotel for friday night. I would need friday to rest up from driving about 12 hours.

I would like to fly but there is no direct route to it. If I do that, which is better? Flying a puddle jumper from NYC (is it possible?) or flying to La Guardia and renting a car?

Thanks.
