"Say you bought a shirt in Pennsylvania where there's no sales tax on clothing.

New York State requires that you pay the New York sales tax on it to New York. And now, there's a line on your New York income tax form to fess up and pay up.

New Yorkers are hit with a new tax, and for many it'll come as a shock."

Full Story Here

I was doing my preliminary run-through with turbotax state when this lovely prompt comes up asking my how much I purchased online/out of state. I sat there stunned thinking WTH???!!! Yeah - like I remember and have receipts for ALL my online purchases for the full year. The main reason I search for deals online is because THE FRIGGIN SALES TAXES ARE TOO HIGH IN THIS $#@%$&^^&%^&% STATE!!!!!!

The tax rate in NY is fscking insane. Luckily I'm only a student, so my state of residence is NOT NY. FFS, you pay the tax when you buy something, not at some arbitrary time in the future.

Along the same line is NY charging you the 5 cent deposit you'd get in return when you buy the soda. WTF is that?

Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, RI has the same thing on the return, but I've never paid it any mind. Screw them if they think they can prove stuff on me without a court order to subpoena my bank accounts.

Maryland has had that forever. Nobody ever puts anything besides '0'

Edit: It comes from being stuck between "Tax free state" "Tax on virtually nothing state" and "Virginia" and being run by a bunch of democrats that need money for god knows what failure of an anti-violence program and predates e-commerce.

Barbara Brunn of Spencer says, "That don't sound right to me. I think the savings should be a savings, and we shouldn't get penalized where we buy our stuff. How did they know I did buy it there? THEY ASK YOU TO CLAIM IT. The state? I think they should find the money somewhere else and not on ridiculus little things like that."

Who is going to sit down and calculate this crap and actually pay the tax? I guess NY is just counting on some people being too naive and afraid that they will just comply and the state will get some more unwarranted money to waste.

Alabama has the same requirement. I also have to claim my federal refund as taxable income.

That is just wrong! You need to get a group of people together to try and repeal that nonsense!
