I am looking at a dually pick up on craig's list.
In New York do duallys have to have commercial tags?
I have heard that they do b/c of their weight.
thanks

I left NY in 2005. Back then, my Ram 1500 was over the weight limit to put regular plates on it. I had to get the truck plates. The DMV website should tell you.

From the NY DMV site

Can I get a passenger class registration for my pick-up truck and drive the truck on parkways?
You can get passenger class plates for a light-duty pick-up truck that has an unladen weight of 5,500 lbs. or less.

So, I doubt the dually will be under that.

You're lucky. In California my pickup needs commercial plates because it has a bed. Instant double registration fee every year. The Durango on the other hand, which for that year shared many many parts including everything ahead of the firewall, isn't a commercial vehicle.

For the 5500LB weight limit, virtually all full size pickups will be over that.

Nissan Titan:
2WD regular cab 5000LBs, 4WD crew cab: 5800

Toyota Tundra:
2WD regular cab: 4600LB, 4WD crew cab: 5700

Dodge Ram 1500:
2WD regular cab: 4500LBs, 4WD crew cab: 5600

Dodge Ram 2500: (hemi)
2WD regular cab: 5300LBs, 4WD mega cab: 6300

Dodge Ram 3500: (cummins)
2WD RC SRW: 6600LBs, 4WD mega cab DRW: 7600

I'm sure Ford and Chevy are similar to Dodge's figures.

Thanks guys, I dunno if NYS has a double reggie thing like California, but the insurance would kill it for me. A year's worth of insurance for a commercial vehicle was quoted to me and it is more than I'd pay for the truck! I don't really need a dually anyway, but wanted a crew cab. I will probably get a 2500 series GMC, but they are hard to find with a crew cab. So I will have to settle for an extended cab 2500. There is a 93 diesel sierra with a rebuilt engine and trans that I will check out this week. It has over 210k miles and is pretty cheap. I can get reg tags for that.

It's not the actual registration fee that doubles, but they add a "Weight fee" that is part of the fees that is non trivial. I've always thought it was BS the way it was determined.

I don't know if there's a scheme in NY as it is in California, but you can tell by the license plate here:
AAA###=passenger car
AA####=trailer
A#####=commercial
(a number may be in the front because they ran out)

You might look to see if there's something similar.
