New York State And College Sports

How come no NYS teams dominate in college basketball and football, other than Syracuse? New York is a big state, and with all the SUNY schools you would think that there would be at least a few more powerhouse teams. People in NYS do like sports. I lived upstate and downstate, and there are many college sports fans in New York, but they tend not to have local teams to cheer for.

Not that New York State should invest more in college athletics. As you might be able to tell, I'm not that much into sports myself. But I was just wondering why you hear more about - say - Kansas and Connecticut colleges when it comes to sports than New York state. 😕

Well.. there's St. John's, Manhattan College made the NCAA tourney two years in a row.

I live near Fordham University, but they are not in any big conference (they play schools like Iona, Columbia..etc).

College sports is not too big in NYS (especially NYC) because of all the big professional teams.

Actually, my question is moreso directed at the SUNY schools.

Not sure about most SUNY schools. I have friends that go to Stonybrook, Buffalo and Albany, but sports are not really too big. I'm surprised Suny @ Buffalo doesnt have a big football program since the Bills are there.

CCNY was big at basketball back in the days.

Yea.. I went to CCNY and they used to be pretty big back then when CCNY was one of the few colleges in NYC. Now they just play other CUNY schools.

They also had some big game versus Kentucky I think that had some controversy?? I forget.

Fordham is in the Atlantic-10 for basketball which is considered one of the major conferences and is only I-AA for football.

I think the only SUNY schools that have teams in Division I-A are Buffalo, Binghamton, and Albany. Buffalo just recently became I-A for football (within the last 5 or 6 years), and I don't know that Binghamton or Albany have any I-A sports besides basketball. I could be wrong, but I do know that Geneseo and Brockport are Division III and, as a result, do not get the same type of attention that a Division I-A school would get.

I'm glad the taxpayer's money isn't going towards big athletic programs.

Yeah, I agree with you on that point. Like I said, I'm not a big sports fan myself. I'm just trying to figure out why this is. Does the legislature cap spending on sports?

I'm not sure I buy the idea that there are too many pro sports teams in NY for folks to cheer for. I live in Ohio now, and adjusted for population differences, there are probably about as many pro-teams here as there are in NY. But people are obsessed with college sports, and OSU, Cincinnatti, and to a lesser extent Toledo, and OU, are very big on sports, almost to the point that these places are about sports first and academics second. Same thing with nearby Michigan and pro/college sports.
