Local workers and businesses had similar mixed reactions Tuesday to the state Senate's override a day earlier of Gov. George Pataki's wage increase veto. The Assembly already overrode the veto in August. So the state's minimum wage will jump from $5.15 an hour to $6 in January, to $6.75 in 2006 and to $7.15 by 2007.

I don't see how workers all think this is going to be a good thing...

Basic economics says if you put more money into the pockets of consumers, but accomplish putting it there only by forcing their places or work to charge more, then those same businesses are going to raise prices to compensate for the additional costs.

Ripple effect sucks for those of us that worked our way up past minimum wage and will now see no increase.

they've increased wages in other states without a) the world ending, and b) much of the cost being passed down to the consumer.

we'll be fine.

Washington State's min wage is one of the highest in the country @ 7.16 hr even then I cannot see how a person can make a living off this wage.

They must be getting by just fine though, for example McDonalds has a .99 cent menu just like everwhere else in the US.

Edit: though I think I just put my foot in my mouth because recently I have been researching pay scales for my type of work in other parts of the country and its higher many places ....one reason for this is the high min wage is probably keeping them from being able to give me more money.

George Bush has been President for 4 years without a) the world ending, and b) much of the cost being passed down to the consumer therefore George Bush is not a bad thing. Pass it along.

What are you, an economist? You act like it'll raise the price of your meals by double. A meager increase in minimum wage shouldn't affect anyone with a "real job".

If a buck or two an hour per employee makes a business raises prices enough to make a significant difference then either A. he is on his way out anyways or B. he is a greedy bastard

Furthermore why do you care? If your wages are so much higher than the small price hikes should not effect you financially anyways.

Yeah - a waitress I know makes awesome money. And she isn't even very pretty.

I own franchised sandwich shops and I will tell you exactly what I do when minimum wage is raised:

First, I increase prices. That's right. My profit margins are already razor thin. I will not be driven out of business by wage increases, therefore I must pass the cost on to the consumer.

Secondly, If the hike is high enough, I am also forced to lay off workers. Not only will the hike affect the wages of my newer lowest paid employees, but the senior, higher paid employees will now ask for raises as well, hiking my payroll across the board.

There is a REASON goods and services cost more in areas and states with higher minimum wage laws.

This has nothing to do with low income workers and everything to do with the unions .. alot of union contracts are tied to the minimum wage. When the minimum wage goes up, they automatically get a raise. Sneaky bastids.

?? WTF do looks have anything to do with tips?

Not all waitresses and waiters work in upper class white neighborhoods or work in a restaurant that serves liquor to soften the senses when it comes time to reach for the wallet.

I blame both of those on the minimum wage being raise in other states.

Actually, waitresses in backwoods diners often make the best tips. It's well known that the best tippers are NOT rich folks. In fact, the higher the success, the lower the tip... on average.

Read any one of the many tipping threads around here and you'll see there are people who will tip higher if their server is attractive, even if service is on par or lower than with an average looking server. Plus, it's the simple social fact that attractive people get treated better and get away with more. Really, that's all pretty elementary stuff.
