wtf. good grief i am so glad i dont live in ny and have this asshat for a mayor. News flash asshat. many mothers can not breastfeed. my wife could not with any of our 3 kids.

Mayor Bloomberg has demanded that hospitals stop handing out baby formula to persuade more new mothers to breastfeed their babies.

The New York City health department will monitor the number of formula bottles being given out and demand a medical reason for each one.

From September 3, 27 out of 40 hospitals in the city have agreed to the terms of the Latch On initiative - which will also see them stop handing out free bags of formula and bottles.

For obvious evolutionary reasons I suspect that nearly all mothers can breastfeed.

And I also heard there is this thing called a store where you can purchase formula and bottles.

It isn't a money issue, it's government trying to force a behavior, do you support the government trying to force behavior?

Everyone supports the government trying to force behavior, it's just a question of what behaviors.

I have mixed feelings about this, owing to my dual dislike of both big government and big business. While this on the surface seems similar to Bloomberg's soft drink nannying, the difference here is that these formula companies are offering an "easy out" to people when they are most vulnerable -- and they market the stuff agressively. If they want to flood the airwaves with ads that is one thing, but pushing the stuff in hospitals is another.

How is it forcing behavior? At most it is trying to influence behavior. But then don't you think that handing out formula is also influencing behavior?

Influencing, forcing, whatever, do you support that as government's role? Handing out formula is giving a choice, are they not allowing new mothers to breastfed if they want to?

Yes they do.

Do you not support government trying to force people to stop raping people, murdering people, etc, etc? If not, why?

They don't force anyone to not do those things, they punish those that do.

Actually they do both. If you are caught by the government plotting a murder you will also be arrested.

Not to mention by this argument the government is not forcing hospitals to do anything, they would just punish those who did.

If someone wants to use formula they are free to go to many fine retailers and purchase it. How is not handing it out removing that choice?

I do agree that "forcing" a behavior is wrong. However, I don't disagree with them trying to "push" or reinforce a behavior. Breastfeeding is so much healthier for the child when possible.

That being said, some women have trouble breastfeeding... however I believe that is usually due to medications and most of those could be stopped for the breastfeeding. I know this because my wife is about to give birth and she stopped taking one of those medications specifically so that she could breastfeed.

IMO they should always go towards the breastfeeding, however, being a hospital they should always have the formula on hand for those who still decide not to.

Also, keep in mind these "free formulas" are purely marketing at the beginning. The companies supply this free formula so that it influences the decision on what to do with the health of your child.

For both of or two children my wife didn't produce breast milk. Basically her body doesn't produce it. Her Mom had the same problem. We tried with or first. She even took out her nipple piercings to breast feed and we bought a pump and everything. I remember waking up and her trying to use that stupid pump to get something to come out and nothing would come out. We eventually talked to lactation specialist and she went over everything and basically my wife body wouldn't produce breast milk. Wasn't anybodys fault it was just the way it was. The wife was irritated that she took out her piercings to breast feed and not be able to. For or second she had a test done before she gave birth to see if her body was producing breast milk and basically it was negative so we didn't even try. So for or second we did bottle from the get go and the hospital had no problem with that. This would be irritating if a hospital would keep bugging us to breast feed. Knowing my wife if they would have kept that up something could have gotten hurt.

that some of it, the other is that there are many women who can not produce enough milk.

Yea, plotting murder is very comparable to breastfeeding a child  The fundamental difference would be that one is an action that harms another.

If someone wants to use formula they are free to go to many fine retailers and purchase it. How is not handing it out removing that choice?

So do you support the government influencing behavior? Can you answer the question? Or are you just going to keep going on about how they can buy it?

So now you're changing the argument. You said not everyone supports government forcing people to not do things. Presumably you realize that's false now. I just picked an extreme example to show you the absurdity of that statement. You almost certainly support large numbers of other things that governments force people to do.

You had to pick an extreme example to validate your love of the nanny state.

You almost certainly support large numbers of other things that governments force people to do.

Could you name them? Be specific.

Compared to other crap that Bloomberg has pulled this is pretty tame. He's just trying to get hospitals to encourage healthy behavior, it's not like they're banning formula.

lol. I love how your ignorance is now my love of the nanny state.

Could you name them? Be specific.

Presumably you enjoy the government forcing people to drive on the right side of the road, to abide by contracts they sign, to not defraud you, etc, etc, etc. To actually list all the things that you almost certainly support the government forcing people to do would take all day.
