New York fire department ordered to remove American flags from its trucks

Fire commissioners in Upstate New York ordered a fire department to remove the U.S. flags that were mounted on its firetrucks because they said the display was a “liability” to the firefighters and other motorists.

Fire Chief Tory Gallante with the Arlington Fire District in Poughkeepsie said the Board of Fire Commissioners told him Monday to remove the two flags, which were fastened to the engine and the ladder truck.

“Obviously, I was disappointed with their directive,” he told The Washington Post.

Gallante said that about 50 firefighters, veterans and members of the community came out Tuesday afternoon for a small, impromptu ceremony to properly take them down. “The guys were upset about the decision and wanted to remove them with dignity and respect,” he said.

Video from the ceremony shows the emergency response vehicles lined up outside the Arlington Fire District headquarters, where firefighters stood at attention.

Both of the flags were taken down, properly folded and then handed to Gallante.

This has a video from the Washington Post. Apparently ABC News was hacked or some kind of copy cat earlier today that I'm sure Disney will be suing.

Need a video of the fire trucks driving with the flags on the back. The commissioners may have a point, they may not.

This is the second thread you've made now from fake urls who try to impersonate a legitimate website.

You should be very concerned that you are being duped so easily, in fact I think we should all be concerned as I doubt dmc is the only one falling for this bullshit and quite frankly that's scary.

This is a real story folks.

"The chairman of the Arlington Board of Fire Commissioners said he's reached out to Chief Tory Gallante to discuss the possibility of a compromise about the use of American flags on fire trucks.

American flags were removed from three Arlington Fire District trucks Tuesday, sparking heated discussion on social media and disappointment from union members.

Gallante was directed by the board to remove the flags from the backs of the trucks during Monday's meeting. He declined to comment on specifics of why the decision was made but said he is “very disappointed with their direction.”

Arlington Fire Commissioner Chairman Jim Beretta said the board majority feel the flags are a "liability during normal operations for our people and other motorists," and that the board had not been consulted before the flags were mounted.

On Wednesday, Beretta told the Poughkeepsie Journal that he has reached out to Gallante and offered to sit down for a discussion with him "and whomever he wants to pull together ... to have an initial conversation on how we might come to a compromise, some solution."

Seems a lot of fuss over something they only started doing recently. <shrug>

Obviously this is just step one on the road to FEMA camps and death panels. Hillary was probably behind this personally since she hates America. There is a probably a FEMA camp planned to be placed in this town so they have to get rid of the American flags now. In the future they will be replaced with the UN flag to reflect who is really in charge.

I think an american flag sticker would be more appropriate than an actual flag....

The story itself is real. Covered in most major news outlets.

And I agree on the decals. Most use a sticker. I can appreciate the concern with a large flag flapping around on the back of a moving vehicle where the municipality would be held liable especially when it was done arbitrarily by the department with no permissions sought.

I tend to agree. There used to be many laws applied to proper display of the US flag, though I guess they have went out of date.

A decal would be fine.
