NEW YORK (AP) — New York's attorney general has opened a civil investigation into President Donald Trump's business dealings, taking action after his former lawyer told Congress he exaggerated his wealth to obtain loans.
A person familiar with the inquiry said Attorney General Letitia Jamesissued subpoenas Monday to Deutsche Bank and Investors Bank seeking records related to four Trump real estate projects and his failed 2014 bid to buy the NFL's Buffalo Bills.

The person wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The New York Times first reported the subpoenas.
Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, told Congress in late February that Trump exaggerated his wealth on financial statements provided to Deutsche Bank when he was trying to obtain financing to buy the Bills. He told a House committee it was common for Trump to overstate his wealth when dealing with the news media or banks, but understate it when it came time to pay his taxes.

Messages left with the banks and the Trump Organization were not immediately returned.

The subpoenas issued by the attorney general seek loan applications, as well as mortgages, credit lines and other documents related to the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., buildings in Chicago and New York and a golf course in the Miami area.

James, a Democrat newly elected to office, pledged to look into Trump's business practices, saying after her victory last November that she'd be "shining a bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings and every dealing."

Trump has complained that James is waging a politically motivated vendetta against him. Her office is also overseeing a lawsuit against a Trump charitable foundation. James' predecessors sued Trump over the operations of Trump University, his real estate school.

Previously, a different New York state agency, which regulates insurance companies, launched an inquiry into Cohen's allegations that Trump also misled insurance companies about his financial worth.

Trump has said Cohen is lying to try to get out of a prison sentence for tax evasion, campaign finance violations, making false statements to banks and lying to Congress.

As might be expected the civil aspects will be handled first and the financial penalties are enough to bust Trump down to Paul Manafort level millionaire. Then criminal proceedings follow and if found guilty Trump is not getting a break like Manafort. NY doesn't give a crap about Trump's money or status. They'll wait until Trump is out of power and then can show up and have him arrested as he leaves the WH on an extradition order.

Good riddance

In order to prove that he overstated his wealth on loan applications, they need proof of his actual wealth, right? Meaning they'd need something like his tax returns?

What is the big deal about Trump being a criminal. He is liked by his supporters and if they had the means and the money, they would all be criminals too. All successful people are criminals, right. I must be right....right. Right.

Somewhere there is a judge that will give him a suspended sentence for good behavior. Maniford’s judge can’t be a freak. White crime is just good business sense.

I should think they would already have his financials including tax returns. I know NY knows everything about me when I file.

I agree. Fortunately, we're glad to host criminals in our fine state without discrimination against old rich white guys.

The Russian witch hunt continues! No collusion! No collusion! Not the puppet! Why isn't Hillary being investigated. Manafort judge even said Manafort proved there was no collusion. Fake News. Invasion on the southern hamberder.

Makes a ton of sense. Lie to Congress to avoid prison time for.... crimes you've already plead guilty to and have already been sentenced...

Well, sometimes you do "overstate" things, out of satire, I assume. However, your second sentence is eerily close to the truth. As long as he hits the hot buttons for his base (abortion, gun control, immigration, cut taxes for the rich), I dont think his base really cares what else he does.

Because the truth is they are as morally bankrupt as he is. When you are threatened as a child by being rejected for being evil, and not for the behavior itself, you learn to hate yourself, not evil. In this way your only salvation lies in pretending not to be what you feel. It then becomes necessary to find an outlet for that self contempt by ascribing what is unconsciously felt about one’s self onto others. By this means the contemptuous become contemptible. To awaken is to forgive.

Trump changed his state of residence to Florida. New York like totally can't touch him now, right? :p
I would think he could be extradited back from Florida for trial in New York, if both states agreed. Which is probably unlikely.

Yep, it's the actions of a totally innocent man that has a trail of strangely coincidental happenstances that could, with a smidgen of creative thinking, connect together and lead to a slight whiff of a stench from which the average layperson could trace back to a day when this man started off his run for the presidency by paying off a porn star hush money that eventually led to an unfolding flood of perjuring, indictments, convictions, cooperation with authorities and further investigations of malfeasance perpetrated by a failed businessman who would be King in name only, owing his rise to power and fealty to a shadowy figure lurking, hovering over and controlling his every move on the world stage.

All this while pleading his innocence as he freely admits to his crimes as those many close associates of his reside in captivity, some of whom implicates him as the source of their willfulness to commit crimes in his name.

Yet there he stands, humiliatingly defiant and ignorantly courageous to the very end with his cult followers holding him ever closer the nearer he gets to his inevitable demise.

This has all the makings of a B grade half-star rated movie rife with retched unbelievable facts and a story line that no one in their right mind could ever imagine to be a true story.

It'll be just like those movies made about Al Capone, Dutch Shultz, Whitey Bulgar, Paul Castellano, etc. only really badly done because the producer/director/actor is, of course, the subject of the movie.

Florida will extradite as there's no immunity for an ex-President.

He can fight it of course for a while but he'll lose. That assumes that someone isn't waiting with a warrant as he exits the WH.

I don't think a state can stop a summons being served in another state. However I don't know how arrests are executed. Florida AG in a Republican so they may have to arrest Trump right after leaving office.

I hope Trump's history of bribing AGs to see things his way is taken into account.
