New York City urged to prepare for hurricane.....

so they're saying it'd be disastrous only because people arent prepared for it. not because they think it would knock buildings down

what about that meteor that's supposed to come close to us this weekend? shouldn't we prepare for that too? 🙂

welcome! now suck it all in: the traffic, the noise, the air, the dirt, the attitude! 😀

Probably not as much risk from winds damaging buildings as there is in the storm surge.

It wouldn't take a terribly powerful one to put much of NYC underwater or out of commision because facilities below ground (utilities/transportation/etc) are inundated and inoperable.

doesn't matter. new yorkers will take it all.
9/11. blackout. transit strike, whats a little huricane gonna do?

seriously though, the subway is so antiquated, that the remnants of some hurricane back in 2004 disabled a lot of subways because of rain overflooding the system. the main queens subway route was shut down. so what happened? i walked. again.

God, I am so sick of New Yorkers thinking they are 'true survivors'. While 9/11 was tragic, it was a tiny tiny piece of New York. Compare this to some Midwestern cities that get practically wiped out by tornados or flooding. A blackout? OH MY GOD!

Reality check in isle 1 please. Everyone takes what gets thrown at them. It doesn't matter where you live.

Most people just like to feel like they are survivors, if it wasn't 9/11 it was something else. Sort of like black people who cry racism at the drop of a hat, they want to feel like they are oppressed, makes people feel tough.

THe chances of a Cat 4 or 5 would be pretty slim of course - but not impossible. But seriously a strong Cat 3 is not out of the question and that would be really, REALLY bad. Not just for New York either, but NJ, CN, RI, MA. It could even knock out the power grid to a good portion of the east coast. Got a flashlight? Surefire baby, Surefire - get one!

A Cat 4 or 5 would devastate just about any low-lying coastal city that was hit by it. The chances of a Cat 4 or 5 hitting coastal cities are pretty slim to begin with, and get much more remote the farther you get from the Gulf of Mexico.

You have to be kidding me. The water up there is to cold to support a hurricane.
*sigh*
I don't know how many times I have to post this. If that thing hit today, it would make the monetary cost of Katrina look like monopoly money. Plus, Atlantic water temperatures are higher now than ever.
