I'd actually like to see some documentation of this.Simply put, Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. argues, the city pays $3.5 billion more to the state in taxes than it gets in return and can't afford it anymore.

But what will it be called?
I am 'not' trying to start a debate here, but could you tell me how NYC is shortchanged by the State?Originally posted by: Kevin
It should but it won't. I can see everyone's point though, the State really rapes us...

CNN is about a month late. There was an article in the Times about this last month.
Here is the breakdown for you non New Yorkers: NYC is an economic crisis. We don't have money for schools, firemen, etc. Subways just raised from 1.50 to 2.00 and that was just to make sure they broke even. Bloomberg had to lay off police and firefighters a couple weeks ago because the city simply does not have enough money. Sales tax is going to be raised from 8.25 to either 8.50 or 8.75. Property taxes have already been raised through the roof.
About the secession: It sounds crazy and it is, but it would clearly help out the city. Even if the city voted for it, it would never happen. Why the hell would a Republican controlled Congress want to let a liberal city and guarantee two Democrats into the Senate (House representation obviously wouldn't change). Even if one of the two currently controlled New York seats that are held by Dems went Rep, it still wouldn't be worth it for the GOP.

Why the hell would a Republican controlled Congress want to let a liberal city become a State (besides the rediculous precidence it sets) and guarantee two Democrats into the Senate (House representation obviously wouldn't change). Even if one of the two currently controlled New York seats that are held by Dems went Rep, it still wouldn't be worth it for the GOP.
BTW - I do not support any type of secession, but I do support New York State getting their sh*t in line and helping us out.
