Hey Guys,

I have mentioned a few times that I'm going to new york w/ crutches from 12/30 - 1/5. I have some more questions if you dont' mind.

1.) what shoes should my girlfriend and I wear? Sneakers ok? Snow boots? I looked at the earth cams and it doens't look like there is snow on the ground. For those in new york, what do you wear?

2.) How cold is it in New York? We're coming from California. Do we need gloves scarves, hat? Are jeans ok, or should we have thermals underneath?

3.) For New Year Eve, I plan on going to times square. What am i supposd to do? Do I just head on over to times square? Should I go early to avoid the crowd. Is there a specific location or tickets that I need to have?

4.) recommend any restaurants? Steak houses?

Thanks all!

well today and yesterday wasnt too bad but earlier this week you definately needed scarfes and gloves. make sure you bring those with you cause you'll need them around this time.

i've been wearing sneakers, but if it snows you're gonna need boots.

for times square go as early as you can close to broadway and 42nd. it does get really packed quick. i usually go late but squeeze in somehow. i hate going there early cause trust me it's freezing there.

restaurants...there's a lot of good ones in times square, but they're really expensive. make sure you have enough money with you. went to carmine's on friday and it's very nice. i heard the wait is like 2 hours, but we didnt have to wait cause our company has connections there. other good restaurants are ruby foos, bubba gump, haru and a whole bunch of others. you can look here link for more info

good luck!

Wear something appropriate for walking all day in cold weather (i.e. no flip flops). I'm wearing some comfy sketchers walking shoes at the moment.

The weather is fluctuating between 20 - 50 degrees. Let me introduce you to my little friend, weather.com.

3.) For New Year Eve, I plan on going to times square.

What am i supposd to do? Hang yourself, it will be much less painful.

Do I just head on over to times square? Yes.

Should I go early to avoid the crowd. Yes.

Is there a specific location or tickets that I need to have? No.

4.) recommend any restaurants? Steak houses?

Keens, Knickerbocker, Peter Luger are a few of the top steak houses. I listed them in order of personal preference, though I haven't eaten steak in quite some time.

Thanks all![/quote]

You're welcome

you mean you have a broken leg etc?

Wow that will make it tough to walk around.

Hiking boots, that are not brand new would be smart.

Thin thermals smart.
Thin gloves, and a hat that will cover your ears.

Times Square ugh. Watch TV would be much easier,LOL.

peter luger's is awesome, and sparks is also another awesome steakhouse. ate there on sat.

Honestly tho...times square is kinda painful to go to for new years. There's not much to do and you just wait out in the cold for hours....

if you wanna be in NY, i'd suggest buying a ticket to a bar for their New Year's event. Expensive usually (around 100), but it's got the NY style. HOWEVER, if you want to go to times square, do it. It'll definitely be an experience.

My daughter did the Times Square New Years thing last year. She & her friends went about 9AM, there were already a lot of people waiting. They got a pretty good spot, however.

The police put everybody into little pens. You are not allowed to leave your pen. At all. Not even for bathroom breaks. Be prepared. No booze allowed, of course. They do a lot of security checks.

Lots of people come by with entertainment, noisemakers, free sample junk, etc. She said it was a pretty festive atmosphere. There were TV cameras. Her group was on TV cheering, on the 6 oclock news or something. I missed it, of course. They passed out special confetti and streamers for them to throw, easier to clean up, I guess.

After midnite, they were desperate for food and a bathroom, but there are so many people that the cops wouldn't let them out of their little pen until like 3AM.

She had a great time, but she's in college. I wouldn't go near that place for anything.

I also suggest the "find a bar" thing. Not anywhere near Times Square, though. It's a zoo.

Also, many people head towards Times Square late in the evening (11ish) hoping to find a spot to celebrate, not realizing how many people are actually there. Those people end up around lower Central Park. I've been there myself, it's fun. Celebrating with a mob of total strangers. No ball drop, but much cheering. You can hear the cheer come up broadway from down at times square. Cool.

Anyway, have fun. And good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Ben Bensons or Frankie and Johnnies in Midtown are great steakhouses. Peter Luger is good if you have an expense account, otherwise it's very overpriced.
