New XPS 8500 with GTX 660 1.5GB--system not regulating fan speed--HELP!

Have a brand new XPS 8500, i7-3770, 16GB RAM, 1.5GB GTX 660.

Video card with 0% GPU load is idling between 26 and 28 degrees C.

Was just playing about an hour of Hellgate London singleplayer, DX10 option, all settings maxed. The card temperature went from 26C to a high during my play of 72C...but the system never budged the fan speed up from 28 percent (minimum).

Is this indicative of a problem? There is NO setting in the Nvidia Control Panel or in the GeForce Experience software to deactivate system control of fan speed. Is my system bonkers to not increase fan speed as I said above?

Highly doubt your VIDEO fan speed stayed at 28%, more likely it's referring to another system fan that didn't need to speed up due to the video load. My doubt is due to the fact that ur card never went past 72. Try some other monitors -- hwmonitor has one that can differentiate video fan and other fans.

That actually sounds kind of ideal. If your peak temperature is 72 without the fan increasing, then you're golden. Quiet system and your video card properly cooled.

Does the computer get any louder during game play? If so, there's a fan spinning faster and fixbsod is right. (I think fixbsod is probably right)

was the continue refreshing while gpu-z is in background checked?

I concur that some fan speed increase had to have happened.

Are you sure you didn't select display minimum in GPUz?
What is the fan RPM?

Could you post a screen shot?

I just doublechecked it--played for a bit with HWinfo64 running in background. Temp went to a high of 71C, fan speed never budged. No increase in noise from the case, either, so I doubt it's a faulty monitor.

Well just set your own fan speed curve if you want more fan, otherwise I wouldn't worry, nothing wrong with 71-72C.

How do I change that? Restarted computer, hit F12, can't find anything in the BIOS about the video card favoring quiet over cool.

If it's the video card's BIOS settings, how do I change that?

I know I can do that, but the system should be doing SOMETHING with the fan speed when the temp is going to over 2.5 times the temperature at idle (26C vs 72C)

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but it's a brand-new system, and if the fan speed isn't acting as it should I want to bring it back...

Your first problem is you're playing Hellgate London.

That is pretty much your only problem I think.

ROFLMAO...I happen to like Hellgate London.

Seriously though, you seriously think the fan speed is alright not budging from 28 percent when the thing hits 72C?

72C sounds normal to me. It doesn't matter that it's 2.5 times idle, really.

So if you're saying that it's ok for the fan to stick to 28 percent when temp shoots up to 72C, it's ok for the card to cool down slowly after gaming, since the fan's at 28 percent (instead of a faster fan speed cooling it more).

Does the card throttle its clocks under heavy load? You're getting artifacts? Download latest 3DMark and run it a few times? Check the results vs other people with similar PCs?

As long as everything (games, benchmarks) runs fine, you're good. You can set a more aggressive fan profile in MSI Afterburner (for example to try and keep card under 60C) if you want. The card will be louder then, obviously.

I'm getting NO performance problems with the card. It just seemed unusual for the temp to spike that much without the fan budging. Everything is running fine.

I'll probably set a slightly more aggressive fan profile in Afterburner--after all the fan shouldn't be able to laze around all day while the 660 works :).

Depends what you're after :) I value silence above all - I got a DirectCU GTX670 just because of the quiet operation. Your card would be very nice for me ;)

My old HD4870 was running 70C at idle a few years ago - that's how the card was designed (first gen GDDR5 didn't downclock...). So yea... :p

The money for the system was a major investment for me right now. I value anything that will extend life over quiet :). I can deal with a noisier fan while I'm gaming.

If the fan profile says 72C is the target under load, then yes it is operating as designed, and yes, the fan will stay at only 28% to cool it down slowly but quietly. If it's intended to be quiet, why would it ever speed up if the card is at a safe temp?

If the fan profile has a target of 60C then the card is broken.

Have you asked Dell?
