New Xbox 360 version?

Hello everyone,
I lost my xbox 360 in a fire at my house a couple months ago (don't ask). I am going to be buying a new one. However, I thought I read that a new version of the 360 motherboard will be coming out with the die shrunk GPU. Does anyone know when this is supposed to take place? I can probably wait for one of the new models if it comes out in the next month or two.

Also, my previous 360 was a Nov. 2005 launch model (it red-ringed once and I RMA'd it). Is the DVD drive still as loud on the current models as it was on my old launch 360? Or have they gotten quieter?

Thanks!

Google "xbox 360 Jasper" or read the FAQ for this forum (8. 8. What are the different versions of the Xbox 360?)

It's probably not out yet, the initial batch of 60 GB 360s are alleged to still use the 175watt power supply and may be using the Falcon motherboard.

If you want the extra reliability of Jasper and to not have to wait a month for a RRoD, you just need to . . . wait a month for Jasper.

MS apparently uses whatever the low bidder is for each new batch of drives, so you play drive roulette each time you buy a 360.

But there's hope: the Fall firmware update (some time before December 21) will allow playing entirely from the hard drive, with the disc just used as a copy-protection check.

I googled it and it appears that the Jasper should be shipping soon, maybe available by early September.

My new PS3 is a die shrunk version so it will be nice if I end up finally getting an Xbox360 to get a die shrunk version of it too. All I ever read about constantly are the RROD! My sister's son has an Xbox360 and I casually asked about it when I was visiting in July. Yep, her husband told me they had to ship theirs off for RROD fixes too.

Hopefully the Jasper units get shipped out in the next month or two. Would love to pickup a Arcade after the price drop for the bedroom.

Any update on this? Still waiting to pick up a new console after I lost my original one. Waiting on confirmation of Jasper in the wild...

Actually, reliability has been more of a motherboard issue than ASIC respin issue. There have been more motherboard revisions than most of us have fingers. The ASIC respins help even more, but far less than the motherboard fixes.

When Microsoft learns that 'LI' does not stand for 'Lectrical Injuneer', maybe the failure rate for all their hardware products will come into line with industry norms.

Ok, reading the comment sections (I thought this was a Microsoft database, not some third party one, and obviously I wasn't the only one), it doesn't appear that Jasper has been confirmed (the people claiming they got one can't/won't provide any proof).

So the question is, what is going on? Supposedly these were supposed to be in production in August and show up in retail by mid-September. More problems?

In other words, a long time. 🙂

:-/ darn.. I'm still waiting to buy a new 360 until someone picks up a jasper and puts the manufacturing date and batch number up on the web so I know what to look for...

Just get one now and enjoy. The amount of time invested in waiting, looking and researching isn't worth it to me..

The falcon is quiet and cool enough for me.

Was kind of hoping that Jasper would be out by now...at $200 for the arcade I've actually thought about picking one up....but I'm just not willing to put up with the hassles of a bed shitting machine.

Falcon has proven to be pretty reliable, though MS still isn't giving out numbers so RRoDs are probably above the failure rate of other consoles. One alleged anonymous insider claimed without evidence that the rate was still 10%, so it must be true 🙂

I've almost bought a Falcon a couple of times this year, the only thing stopping me is that I don't "need" one yet because of my huge backlog of PC, PS2 and PS3 games.

If you're out of things to play, picking up the $300 60GB with free Lego Indy seems like a decent choice. If you don't have a gaming PC it's the next best choice for Fallout 3.
