New Xbox 360 owner - any advice?

Broke down and picked up a new 360 4GB because I got a sweet deal for it - now I'm wondering what I should be looking forward to and should be looking into - games, accessories and what not...

\all opinions and suggestions are welcome
\\came close to getting a PS3, but I've come to like the 360 controller quite a bit...

A harddrive isn't bad to have if you fancy downloading videos and demos. You can get a generic 250g with the Slim enclosure for 40-50 bucks on Amazon. Don't bother paying three times as much for the Microsoft brand variant unless you absolutely have to have buggy emulation of Xbox 1 games. A rechargable battery pack for 20 can also be handy, although the double AA's your 360 came in will likely last you 30+ hours so it doesn't have to be a top priority.

As for games, there is tons to choose from. For 20 bucks each you can get:

Mass Effect 1 and 2
Elder Scrolls 4
Fable2
Fallout 3 / Fallout new vegas
FF 13
Grand Theft Auto (GOTY edition is 20 at walmart, 40 everywhere else atm. Regular edition is 20 everywhere)
Ghostbusters
Halo 3
Gears of War 1 and 2
Dragon Ages Origins

I'd suggest paying 10 more and getting the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 and Dragon Ages for all the add ons, but if the console and accessories is setting you back, the regular editions still give you a lot of value for your money.

Thanks much - I did pick up the Gears 1-2 combo pack and Fallout 3.

Is the emulation really that buggy because I'd love to play Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb again...

I'm thinking that if I were to get a third party hard drive this would be a good time to do it - so for others that have played old xbox games - how is the compatibility?

It has it's ups and downs. I played through Knights of the old republic and it was buggy as hell, the sound going in and out and several cut scenes being jerky and impossible to enjoy. I played Panzer Dragoon Orta on it and it works just fine, no hiccups. I pop in my Sega GT/Jet set radio future hybrid disc or my Clone wars hybrid disc that came with my Xbox 1 however and the 360 doesn't even recognize it. Emulation on the 360 is a real crapshoot. If there are some xbox 1 games in particular you want to try I'd suggest googling the compatibility list. Just bear in mind some titles will work without a hitch while others will barely work.

As for harddrives, here's one for 40 bucks that will do everything but the xbox1 emulation as it lacks the partition necessary to make it work out of the box. http://www.amazon.com/250G-Hard-Disk...7459321&sr=1-1

You "can" hack it however and add the partition yourself using a google guide. If you find that prospect intemidating however and are willing to pay 50 more to get it right out of the box your only recourse is Microsoft's official brand. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-250GB...7459321&sr=1-2
