New Xbox 360, game recommendations?

I got the 360 4GB + Kinect free from work (safety incentive, woot!). Plan to upgrade to 250GB HDD shortly.

Looking for good racing, rpg and shooters. Prefer last year's games, don't like spending $60 for the latest/greatest...

Thanks!

For racing, get Forza. 3 is last years game and was great, but you can get 4 for around $40 now if you search.

RPG: Start with the Mass Effect series, it's amazing. Also, Borderlands is a nice RPG/shooter combo.

Forza 1-4 all great, any of the Call of Duty series but World at War. Never played it myself but have not heared anything but bad about it,The Gears of War series,Red Dead Redemption to name a few.

That should read "Any of the Call of Duty series but Call of Duty 3". World at War wasn't that bad, and it's the only one with split screen campaign co-op.

I forgot how bad 3 was. I remember playing it for about an hour, than taking it back to the store.

"Must have" titles for Xbox 360 (in my awesome opinion):

- Mass Effect 1 & 2 (epically awesome series)

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (the campaigns in all COD games are rinse-and-repeat filler, so might as well get the one that is most dominant online right now and save money)

- Skyrim (duh)

- Halo: Reach (duh)

- Gears of War (I personally liked the first two campaigns, and think they're worth picking up... I think there's even a combo pack for like $30 with both games and all DLC)

- Forza is a killer racing game, but too realistic for my tastes; the Burnout series is more my speed (ie, INSANE) and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit was fun too

Trying to limit myself. I think that pretty much covers the most important ones.

PS: If you have never played them before, the Orange Box is a good deal for the entire Half-Life 2 series (but this isn't really a "must")

Thanks for the responses, guys!!

How much difference is there between Forza 3 & 4? I saw Forza 3 for <$20 yesterday, that's about my speed. Also, is there a local competitive mode in the Forza games? How about the other recommendations of Burnout and NFS:HP?

Sounds like I definitely need to check out Gears, just got a copy of Mass Effect 1 from a buddy at work. And ordered Assassin's Creed II Platinum from Amazon last night for like $10. So should have some stuff to play with by this weekend.

For Gears, check around for the "Triple Pack" deals under $10. It's Gears 1 & 2 and a pile of DLC to add on. Great value for the $$.

Crackdown 1 is a very good and fun single-player shooter. Think Robocop meets Spider-Man. Crackdown 2 is fun but not as good.

Lost Odyssey is a good JRPG.

If you don't have a gaming PC:
Mass Effect 1-2, Oblivion for RPGs and Borderlands for shooters (solo or co-op).

Assassin's Creed II is amazing! Been playing the heck out of this game for the last two days. It took a bit of getting used to, I haven't played with a console controller in like 15 years and the running/jumping/etc seemed disjointed at first. But now I'm realizing you can almost just do it on autopilot, as long as you just keep the controller pointed where you want to go.

Edit: Is AC3 as good as 2? Might have to pick that one up too once I finish 2.
Edit2: Wow, apparently there's AS 2.5 and 3 out there? How do Brotherhood and Revelations stack up against 2?

Mass Effect, I'm getting in to it somewhat but the fights aren't easy at all for me. Love the storyline though so will probably keep at it.

Played a little Forza 3 with the girlfriend, need to get a wheel for her, she hasn't played consoles since she was a kid and not too much then (unlike me). She's having a really hard time figuring out how to make the 'micro' adjustments you have to in racing games, she drastically oversteers quite often and runs into walls all the time.

What's a good, relatively inexpensive steering wheel?

Really? Mass Effect 2 is far from "epically good", it's a 10 hour scavenger hunt with a 30 minute hallway shooting ending.

depends on how you play and if you play with DLC or not. I dropped a heck of lot more than 10 hours into the game.
