NEW X48 boards from MSI

Details about these mobos are given in the MSI website... Although I would like to know about the X48C platinum board...

The main feature is it has 2 DDR2 DIMMs and 4 DDR3 DIMM slots... in dual channel

would this board be a good buy when it releases? I mean, by having both DDR2 and DDR3 its a gr8 vantage from the upgrade point of view... but in general how do these boards perform?

Well, in general DDR2+DDR3 combined doesn't work out well - the BIOS isn't optimzed for either, so you don't get maximum performance no matter what you choose, and you can't use them both at once to max out your GBs of RAM. I'd rather pick a type and get a good mobo that only uses that one.

Hands off! For now i would say.

I've been testing this board for 4 weeks now (under engineering MCP)
and received final boards last week.

I'm having heavy stability problems with this mobo, concerning
ESATA perfomrance (200kb/s- 6MB/s max. data transfer rate)
& SATA performance in generell when additional IDE Devices are plugged in.

You have to use dummy modules for either using the DDR2/DDR3
feature, not the best solution in my opinion. There are 5 SYSFANs
present on the mobo but you can only adjust Sysfan 1 in the bios.
The settings on this one will affect the others....

After some stability full throttle stability tests the mainbord gets
a little unstable. Temepratures are ok though.

I'll keep you updated, but if I were you, keep the hands of mobos
that use every little bit the X48 Chipset has to offer. Seems that
such overloaded boards are not the best choice. We'll see
what the future brings. I will get a new bios by my msi guys tomorrow.
Hope it solves some of the issues i discovered.

cheers

Tests showd that the X48C Platinum doesnt like Single Sided 1GB DDR2 Modules.
No problems on Double Sided Modules tough. Doesnt matter wich size they come (512MB/1GB/2GB).

No Problems under DDR3 discovered till today

Jap ;-) Working @ a testlab for quite a long time now.
Had some health problems the last year, just started working
@ the lab in january. Have to catch up a lot of stuff......

Back to the X48C:

First problems with DDR3 Modules showed up!

DON'T TRUST the RAM compatibility list that you can download
from the MSI website!

E.g. tried to install 4x DIMM: 1GB DDR3 PC8500 QIMONDA IMSH1GU13A1F1C-10F
, wich are supported according to the list. In single & dual channel mode.....guess what?!?
Maximum DIMMs of the QIMONDA modules accepted by the X48C is 1 DIMM!

Tried many variations but it refuses working with more than 1 DIMM is installed. I don't
understand how MSI tested it succesfully with 2 DIMMs installed....
damn, now i have to test every DIMMs i have on stock in the lab to asure the RAM compatibility with the mobo.......argh...

additional still having problems with the P5N-T Deluxe & another MSI Board featuring SLI with onboard chipset....seems like there's a virus in the air, infecting all my boards ;-)
Or maybe i shocked all boards with an ESD ^^ hrhr

Tested many DDR3 and DDR2 Modules, all are working....guess what, my mobo
was damaged, that's why the QIMONDA modules didn't ran properly.
SO the QIMONDA DDR3 modules ARE WORKING like a acharm. Equipped 2 new
mobos with 4Gigs each and had no problems @ all ;-)

Can't be that nearly 40percent of the mobos i get are DOA or nearly DOA.... ;(

Anyway,i will will go on with testing.

If anyone has a question about the X48C Platinum or wants me to test some specific combinations (CPU/RAM/GPU/HDD)
just shout ;-)

Cheers
