Too bad there's no direct comparisons to the 7800gtx, but they go into a lot of technical details on IQ and performance if you're interested. Some cliff notes:

1) The new memory controller does significantly improve AA performance, as a x1800xl usually beats a x850xt pe, even with slower memory. In fact the x1800xl is almost always faster than the higher clocked x850xt pe, showing the benefits of the new architecture.

2) HQ AF only causes about a 5% performance hit in worst cases compared to regular AF, so it's entirely usable.

3) Supposedly a new Facry patch allows HDR with AA, and after the initial big hit from enabling HDR, adding AA does not cause an additional equally huge hit. In Chaos Theory, the hit from HDR is nowhere as big as in Farcry

4) There seems to be a pretty big difference in performance between the x1800xt and the x1800xl, as the xt often gets the same fps at 16x12 as the xl gets at 12x10.

I predict an X1800 GTO (or some other name from the X8xx series)

Why should an X1800XL lose to an X850XT PE in ANYTHING?

The x850xt actually passes up (very rarely) the 7800gt as well on occassion, so its not unbelievable to take this into account.

They both have 16 pipes, but the x850xt pe has a higher clocked core and memory, so it's up to the new architecture to make up for the difference, and looks like it more than makes up for the clock speed deficit.
