I considered getting a WRX STi when I was shopping for a new car, but with all the options that I wanted (such as the navigation system), it would have cost about $5k more than my Altima. :\ One thing about buying the nav systems, is that I found it hard to actually test them out... because the dealers had no cars equipped with them (in '07). When I picked up my car, the one salesman actually asked if he could show a potential buyer the technology packaged in my car since I had the only car with one.

I'm still looking for good alternatives to replace my head unit. I'd love to try and build my own, but working the software would be pure hell. Especially since my current one boots in about 5 seconds!

I had the chance to test-drive a new GT-R when I got my Z in 2009 and it was a blast. Their condition was I had to drive WAAAAAY behind any other cars to avoid possible paint damage from rocks or debris, etc. It was a blast though...

I'd be in heaven if I got a chance to test drive one. I know the local dealer here sells them, but I don't know if they'd let me test drive one (if one is even available).

You cross-shopped an STI and an Altima... and for $5k less you went for the Altima? o_O

I cross-shopped a lot of sedans in the $40K range with the main consideration having a manual and being 'fun to drive"

Completely different animals

I'd have gone for the STi, but I'm addicted to power...

I'd choose a STi over an Altima and I'm a VQ fanboy.

I'd choose an STi over an Altima because <insert any reason you want>

Anyway OP, congrats on the purchase. Those are sweet rides. Any plans to lower it?

I found the Altima a lot more comfortable and much roomier. The VQ still provides more than enough power, and the only negative aspect of it was the lack of AWD, which is nice in the north.

Yes, the high-end STi was north of $35k, which was more than I wanted to spend. Honestly, the Altima was probably more than I should have spent on a car. A 3.5L V6 Altima costs about $26k base, and the tech package alone is ~$2k. My Altima is the 3.5SL, which isn't available anymore, but I believe it was a $28k base as it includes leather and such by default.

I actually first set out looking between Evo, STi and G35x. Unfortunately, I didn't have an Infiniti dealer close to me at all. I probably could have traveled to one though.

EDIT:

About the "roomier" aspect, in almost every car I get into, I'm cramped. I'm 6'1" with a lot of length in my legs. When I went back up to New York a week ago, I was set to rent an Altima using a nice corporate discount , but I was an idiot and forgot that my credit card expired and I didn't put the new one in my wallet. D'oh. I ended up feeling like a cheap ass bum and used my mom's other car, which is a Nissan Versa. Even with the seat all the way back and the steering wheel all the way up, it still feels cramped.

On the drive back down, I drove my brother's Suzuki Verona, and it's a mid-sized sedan, but I still felt cramped with everything set to give me as much room as possible.

My Altima has A TON of room for my legs... while I think the headlights and taillights are absolutely hideous on the car, I've never been more comfortable. Well, I might be in a much more luxurious car, but let's keep to the same price range. ;) If I was purchasing a car today, I'd probably go for an Infiniti G37 or a Nissan Maxima. I love the way the new Maximas look... very aggressive! Unfortunately, they didn't come out until the year after I bought my Altima ('07).

EDIT 2:

Not sure if I really got this point across, but even though I chose an Altima, I certainly do like the STi and Evo. :)

I hate you, what happened to the prelude?

Which one is faster? WRX or 370z?

It looks like the 370z has better stats at about the same curb weight (~3200lb). Although, two things I'm not sure about is that the WRX reaches its peak at lower RPMs and how the AWD may boost/hinder it.

Note that I got my numbers from here:
2011 WRX Limited
2009 370Z

Sold the Prelude...it needed more care than I have time to give it right now and I wanted someone else to have the chance to enjoy it more than I was able to.

As for the Z versus the WRX, it's an interesting comparison. The gearing is VERY different between the two cars. The WRX feels much more light than the Z, but the Z is more predictable and linear in curves. When I get about 400 more miles on the WRX and go stage 1, it will have around 260hp/295tq at the wheels. That's about the same hp as the Z, but with 50-60 more ft/lb of torque. At that point, the WRX will definitely be a little faster, but the Z can take hard launches all day while the WRX cannot.

Both cars are tons of fun...I will upload a couple pics of the Z tomorrow as well. Ended up seeing a movie right after work with the fiance today, so I didn't get the chance to wash the car and grab pics. Got a half-day at work tomorrow so I will throw them on here in the morning.

Side note: Of course, a week after I get the car they put tar down on the road in front of my place and cover it with gravel for a nice 'poor man's re-surfacing' project...can't keep the car clean at all driving through that crap...

No kidding. Most of the STi's I saw coming into MN were Limited + NAV and were pushing 40k. Love the STi, but it's not a 40k car...

Well thats a chop, but technically the new toyota FJ project would be something of an Impreza coupe. Also I've heard that the future WRX's won't be simply hopped up Imreza's but smaller and more focused vehicles. :hmm:

I do like Subaru's DGM color, and the gray wheels go brilliantly.

Also, for not Castieling us.

Yeah, I like traditional 5-spokes but the DGM goes really well with the gray wheels. It looks even better in person IMHO. The Z is that way too, pictures look OK but the car looks much better in-person.

Edit: I will open a new thread next week for my GT-R purchase, how about that? All I have are stock photos though....;)
