New wireless router, can no longer VPN to work

I just upgraded my 802.11 Linksys router to a Belkin Pre-N router (for range, not really the speed). I installed it correctly and even gave it the same SSID. For now, I am not using any security, and all of my computers can access the internet just fine.

The problem is, I need to VPN into work to use certain programs. It is an Intel NetStructure VPN program. I enter my info like usual, and it starts to log me in but then it fails. The last thing it does is "Requesting Client IP and WINS/DNS info" and then I get "Unable to obtain Client IP" and it fails.

I have not changed any settings so i know it has to be the router. I disabled the firewall on the router and it is still not a go. I can connect to secure sites like banks, etc, without any issues, so it's just the VPN thing. My office helpdesk is closed for the weekend (not sure they would be able to help me), so I am asking if any of you Gods might be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Linksys routers have VPN passthrough enabled by default. Poke around your web configuration and see if you have VPN passthrough.

Belkin says I need to find out the ports needed and then open them in the router. My work helpdesk has no idea what I am asking about. Can anyone assist from here?

The online version of the router's manual on Belkin's site is pretty much worthless, so I can't give you exact directions, but you need to log in to the router's configuration page and enable VPN pass-through.

To log in to the router (assuming you haven't changed the settings on it), enter http://192.168.2.1 in your browser's address bar and when prompted for a password, leave it blank. (If you have changed the router's password, then use the password that you set.)

Once you are logged in to the router you'll need to look for a setting - usually under Advanced - for VPN pass-through. Enable that setting and you should be able to connect to your office VPN.

if your helpdesk can't help, I would start looking for another job. A worthless IT dept can drag an entire company under.

Did the IP range that your router gives out (DHCP) change? Maybe the new subnet conflicts with the IP that the VPN wants to give?

What type of VPN authentication are you using?

Also...Helpdesk != IT Department. Quality in one area is generally unrelated to quality in another area. Granted, the helpdesk should have an escalation path to an IT/Network Engineer who built the VPN setup, who should be able to troubleshoot this problem.

Ok, this is weird. If I connect up via cable to my router then I can get to my VPN, it's only when set up wirelessly. Again, if I connect my old router I don't have a problem wirelessly. What setting could that be?

That's because your new router isn't letting the VPN traffic through. No actually read everyones suggestions and follow some of them. It will fix your problem.

Just a little update in case anyone else runs into the same issue in the future and does a search. I tried everything above and still no go. Belkin tech support gave me ports to enter for forwarding and that still didn't help. I got an RMA and was about to return it when I found out there is a new firmware online. When using the router to upgrade its firmware it didn't see it because it is a very minor upgrade. Anyway, installed the new firmware and everything is golden without having to open any ports.

Thanks to everyone for their answers.
