I am setting up a wirelkess network for a friend and he wants to leave it open - is there a way to see who is currently using it or has used it over a certain time period?

PS - is setting up WAP merely a matter of activating it in the router, making up a password, then enabling it in the laptop and typing in the password?
 
Yes. WPA is very simple to configure.
Just think of a phrase, bunch of words with spaces (safer) and enable it in the router.
Then use the same password / Key with the notebook card.
