hi i set up a wireless b network using linksys card and router and i feel sort of insecure about it any thing i need to know about setting things up? encryption etc?
thank you

no way to tell afaik.

Just check the router every so often to make sure it wasn't hacked or anything. On my Netgear MR814v2, I can see the "connected devices". I check that to see if anyone else is on it. I also monitor the MAC address list.

As for how to set it up, do the following:
- hide the SSID
- setup WEP encryption
- use MAC address filtering

thanks after some confiuration problems were worked out i have secured my net. i get a true stealth analysys from grc and feel secure i was i think being a hot spot for a while till i turned off broadcasting. i was getting moofed from my own net now we are stable and i hope secure
thank you for the help

The whole issue of Wireless security is a combination of Realty, Truth, Myth, and our love of Horror Movies.

If you Wireless Network is Not minimally Secured any one with a Wireless Client in their computer might stumble upon your network and use it.

If you use the security measures as mentioned above, people who are intend to do harm might find a way to log to the Network, and by intercepting the traffic work for Days (hours if they are lucky) and brake the encryption code.

You want to test? Take a Laptop go outside your house or (hallway if you are in an apartment) and see if you can log to your Network, pretending that you Do Not know your SSID (put in the SSID of the laptop WLAN which is the common default SSID). If you can learn how to intercept and break codes and see how long it takes to brake into your Network you would know how secure is your Wireless.
