That seems to have done the trick! Event Viewer was silent after I put the system to sleep. Teamviewer... last thing I would have throught of.

I wonder how many of these issues are with SSDs. I have inconsistent wake from sleep behaviour with mine, which is an Intel 330, Sandforce based, but the behaviour was the same on Windows 7.

There are a number of things you can do.

1) Replace the SSD with a different one.
2) Never let the machine sleep (which is possible for a desktop, at least if it's a low power one.)
3) Turn off hibernation.
4) Update the SSD firmware.
5) If you have an Intel controller, update the AHCI driver.

I'm testing with turning hibernation off and not "spinning down" the hard drive after 20 mins as is the default for Windows, although I'm keeping the sleep function on for the time being. This machine only consumes about 20-22 Watts at idle and about 25-30 Watts active, but still, I'd prefer to have it sleep when appropriate.

However, I'm tempted to just buy a new 128 GB SSD for $60+ with a Marvell controller and be done with it. I could just use the Intel 330 Sandforce drive as a backup drive or something.

Luckily I don't use the laptop with the sleep issue very often, I'd be more annoyed if I was out and about with it. It's got an m.2 something I put in there and can't remember what it is and a 1tb spinny disk, that m.2 stuff is so new who knows. I'll check for a firmware update for it later. Desktop hasn't had any more issues, it's an 850pro and a bunch of spinny disks.

Desktop randomly wakes up from sleep on it's own, twenty minutes to an hour in, with a powercfg -lastwake looking at the Intel USB3 on my Z97 board.
Nothing plugged in USB other than mouse and KB and they are both set not to wake OS from sleep.

How do you wake from sleep without using either: mouse or keyboard?

Anyway, there's usually 2x USB 2.0 ports adjacent to the PS/2 port that should normally be used only for mouse and/or keyboard. Mouse and/or keyboard should not normally be plugged in to a USB 3.0 port. Or at least until such future time that Intel decides to completely do away with USB 2.0 ports, leaving only USB 3.0/3.1 ports.

Kick it?
Power button might wake, never tried.

Whatever was acting up on the desktop magically fixed itself apparently. I've had
pretty good luck plugging kb and mice willynilly into whatever was handy
the last few years but I'd prefer em on usb2 yeah. That stuff's gonna go away
before too long I imagine, usb2.

If you have a laptop, usually closing the lid will put it to sleep, and opening the lid will wake it back up.

However, for some reason that doesn't work on mine. If I close the lid it will go to sleep, but when I re-open the lid it stays asleep. Irritating. I have to press a key to wake it back up. However, that was the same behaviour on Windows 7 as it is now on Windows 10.

And yes, pressing the power button will also wake it back up.
