Fresh OS install.

What is "trim" ? How do you set that?

Would you remove the boot order to only look at SSD?
(Instead of trying CDROM, etc)

In theory, defrag once for good luck.

Also, what's the best way to set a restore point in Win?
Use the built in system restore? How do I access that?

Any other general optimization or config tips?

It is enabled by default on 7 and up.

I don't know why one would do that.

I don't know why you would do that. It would interfere the filing structure used by the drive, not to mention shorted the life of your drive.

Yes, Windows does this automatically.
How do I access that?
Depends on the OS.

A solid state drive really hides the "optimizations" that we used to think would improve the speed of Windows on a mechanical hard drive. They really aren't necessary. The best thing you can do for an SSD is to make sure you have enough RAM, in order to make the most of the life of the drive.

Disable themes if you do not care about the eye candy of the look and feel of the desktop.

Depending on the laptop by disabling themes you can get anywhere from 2% to 20% performance back making the laptop feel even faster in response time.

lol I'm afraid to google the word "trim". God knows what I might find.
Lol.😀 yes good one.
and for OP.in windows 7 I always disable windows gadget and printer fax.if you don't use it.control panel/programs and feature/install uninstall/on the left side turn windows feature on or off.the gadget is know to be vulnerable.

Before making any changes, I would create a Restore disk using the sometimes hidden partition on the hard drive. Then I would spend some time learning what the OEM version does, and determine what is useful and what is not useful to me for what I want to do.

And for OP, I would refrain from dual posting - they can get you an infraction. These should be merged.

I turned off themes, and did not like the look.
I am used to the default Win7 look and feel.
I will leave themes enabled.
