Update 10-17 from Engadget:

It's coming to the US too. No GameCube BC and NO PRICE CUT. Boo, hiss!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/16/gamecube-free-wii-refresh-heads-to-north-america-competes-with/

"Usually when a hardware refresh axes a major feature, it gets a comparable price drop. Not for Nintendo's waggle star, however -- the gamecube-free Wii refresh we've seen advertised for Europe is heading to North America for the same price as its backwards-compatible kin. $150 will get you a black console designed to lay on its side and streamlined to play only Wii software, a Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack and a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. All well and good, except that Nintendo's press release (which you'll find after the break) also promises that the existing Wii bundle will stick around, packing Mario Kart Wii, a Wii Wheel, backwards compatibility for Gamecube games and the very same $150 price tag as the downgraded redesign. Mark your Christmas wishlists carefully folks, this one's a doozy. "

"The downside, however, is that the slimmed-down Wii won't be compatible with GameCube games or controllers, though it will reportedly be sold at a reduced, unspecified price."

I never had a GameCube, so one of the reasons I've thought about getting a Wii someday was to be able to play any good GC games along with the Wii games. If they're dropping GC in the newer models I might finally grab my Wii and play with it while I still can. 😉

Why would they do this now when the new Wii will be coming out next year?

The new unit is to cut manufacturing costs, just like the many revisions of the PS2. That lets them make money while lowering the sale price.

The price drop is to increase the size of sales, since Wii sales have gone limp.

:awe:

If the new Wii drops Gamecube controller compatibility, how will people play the GC games through the Wii store?

Perhaps, despite all the email offers they get, they think some people want an even smaller wii.

But seriously, it's all about reducing their costs. Besides the costs for their unit, they also save on shipping and inventory by having a tiny package.

(Also mentioned: "unit", "smaller wii", "increase the size" and of course "grab my Wii and play with it".)

why wouldn't they do this now? do you not realize that they are a business trying to make money? The Wii sold at a record pace its first few years but that was a long time ago now, obviously Nintendo wants to capitalize on the holiday season and stimulate sales

there are GC games in the Wii Store? its been a while since a checked...although if you mean the virtual console games then you'll just have to use one of the many other options wiimote/wiimote+chuck/classic controller

How slim can it be? The Wii is pretty damn slim as is.

true, but it can still be slimmer

remove the GameCube stuff and shrink down the internal components and you go from fullsize disc drive thickness to half-height

considering the original system is already below 20W, I'm pretty sure getting rid of the fan on an updated design wouldn't be too difficult

Are the $99 Wii units on stores shelves now, are they the non-backwards-compatible units now, or are they still the normal units?

The reason I ask is, I needed some money, so I tried to trade in my Wii (still unopened, I paid $250 for it), and GameStop offered me $12.

So I offered it to my buddy for $60.

He said he won't be able to pay me until two weeks from now, but by then I should have some money.

So I said I might not sell it two weeks from now, because I wouldn't need the money, and he got really pissed off. Said if I said I was going to sell it, I should sell it. (This same person has repeatedly borrowed money from me, and promises to repay it, but never does when he says he will.)

So I figure I'll sell it, and then get another one (or the new Wii console, if it's backward-compatible) in the future.

But I did buy one GC game to play on the Wii. Not sure where it is right now, but it would be nice to be able to play it.

Will the next-gen Wii also be able to play GC games, or is the older Wii the only one?

Not announced for the US yet, not out anywhere yet.

I haven't seen anything either way. My guess is no on GC BC.

So you bought a Wii back when they were selling for $250, but haven't opened it, and you really plan on playing it sometime? It sounds like you would be best served selling it, because if you haven't cracked it open yet, I don't see anything on the horizon that would change that.

Maybe we will get lucky and they will release a USB adapter to run the older controllers so that we can keep playing GC games and such.

I don't know if this will lower the price of the current Wii to make room for the new, or if people will treasure the BC like they did with the old PS3s and make it worth even more.

If the former, I'd buy a Wii for $100. That would probably shake out any holdbacks that have even the slightest bit of interest.

I remember back in 05' Sony giving Microsoft hell for turning to emulation to provide backwards compatibility with their old games.

Now they're the only ones to support it. In any capacity.

All PS3s still support 99% of all PS1 games. You can even buy classics like Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger cheap in digital form via PSN.

It is a shame that Sony stopped including the extra hardware needed for PS2 emulation though. It worked flawlessly for me with my PS3 60 GB, and having unlimited memory cards on the hard drive was convenient.

Nintendo still supports backwards compatibility. This new slim Wii isn't out yet, and there's no indication that this new slim Wii version will be sold outside of Europe. Microsoft on the other hand stopped working on backwards compatibility support long ago leaving a long list of games unsupported. It's also not supported on Xbox 360s without hard drives.

All of the nezt consoles should be powerful enough to emulate completely via emulation, and maybe even with enhancments.

I personally have never understood why Sony never emulated the PS2 completely and near perfectly via the Cell as I'm sure it would've been possible. They wouldn't even have to use the RSX, and they couldn't anyway, since there would Z-buffer issues if I'm not mistaken (the PS2 used a 32 bit zbuffer and the PS3 only goes up to 24 bit depth precision if I'm not mistaken)
