NEW! Which would u get? SLK-800, PAL8045, Swiftech 462+?

This is a re-edit of the previous question.

I'm building a new system and considering the SLK-800, PAL8045 or Swiftech 462+

My cpu will be a Thoroughbred 'B' 2100+ I hope to OC to a fsb of 166 on an EPOX 8RDA+

I want quiet, please.

I now figure one of these:

1. Thermalright SLK-800(with bolt-thru)
2. Alpha PAL8045
3. Swiftech MCX462+

with a panaflo fan for that much desired *quiet*.
They're all priced between about $40-$50 without a fan... cheaper than that water cooling I was thinking about. 🙂

Please tell me your opinion of the 3 candidates.

None of them. If you want silence get a thermalright, swiftech, or alpha hs with a panaflo. Aeroflow, although quiet, is still noisy compared to what I listed.

Thanks ouloat,

I just did a little reading from an old article at HardOCP and although dated, there's two heatsinks that sound good:
1. Alpha PAL8045T without a fan and
2. Swiftech MCX462+ also w/o a fan
The pal costs about 35 + shipping whereas the Swiftech is goin for around 44 + shipping
I do all my initial pricing at newegg.
I don't know which model panaflo to check out, probably an 80mm job with a 3-pin plug.
Of course, if the pal and swiftech are about = in performance I would go with the cheaper.
I was looking at watercooling but man what a premium to pay, and just for want of quiet, not for any super overclocking.

I hope this hs/f combo will serve my needs for the above mentioned hardware.

I don't recommend buying cooling supplies from newegg
Go to SVC for cooling stuff... better prices
Get a slk-800 or better and you'll be well off.
The panaflo will work well in combination

amcdonald, I see the one you're talkin about. Nice price, too. I was angry at SVC for a while, but they finally made things right. I just may give them a try again.
Time to edit the subject question of this thread.

Today I swapped my YS-Tech 80mm Variable Speed for a Panaflo L1a on my SLK800 and it's running at about 42C under full load. The YS-Tech had it around 38 or 39, never over 40, depending on room temp.

Edit: 1600+ @ 1743 (10.5x166) and Epox 8k5a2+

Personally I just ordered a 900U this weekend from svc.com
I'm going to stick a spare 92mm zalman zm-f2 on it.
the zm-f2 are nigh inaudible with the bundled undervolt adapter.
I have a 2100+tbredB on a 8rda+ as well...

Bupkus:

I see one of your options is using the Alpha Pal 8045 with your Epox 8RDA+.

Look at this link first and you will see this note:

NOTE 3 : When installing the standoff washer, it could possibly touch the surface mount resistors close to the motherboard hole. A possible solution would be cutting a part of washer using a set of nippers or cutting pliers to provide clearance. Due to these issues, we consider the use of the PAL8045 on this board a "Use at your own risk application."

This is why I prefer the SLK-800(A). It uses a great three hole socket clip and is a great cooler and you don't have to worry about problems like this. Of course you can't argue that a clip designed HSF (even when using all three socket stubs) may not hold up as well during heavy case transportation like a bolt on type. But, it would take a awfull big "thud" to dislodge this heat sink from the mobo's socket. (I have three SLK-800's on my rigs).

Hope this helps you out!

I installed an alpha 8045 on my 8rda+... you just have to cut the washers a bit, its no big deal at all.
I'd spend another $3 for the bolt-on peace of mind... actually I spent another $15 for 900U

As price goes, I can get each of these option w/o a fan but with shipping for:

Alpha PAL8045 - $41
MCX462+ - $50
SLK-800 - $43
SLK-900 - $53

I really don't want to take out the Dremel for the Alpha unless it's better than the SLK-800..

A decision has just been made. Looking further through the HardOCP website I found a more current article showing the superior performance of the SLK-800 to the pal8045. Since I was prepared to spend big for water cooling I think I'll just go with the SLK-900 and a big a*s 90mm panaflo or whatever is best.

Time to post a new thread.
"What's the best fan for the SLK-900 for quiet cooling?"

I went with the Panaflo High Output myself.
Model FBA-09A12H. 92mm x 25mm, 12v. 2.7 watt, 2850 RPM, 57 CFM, 35 dBA.
I wanted to cooling of the 57CFM for my OC.
