True, it's a big drive and would be nice to have but the price is pretty darn high right now at around $400 USD.
The 180Gig is also going pretty darn high too. I'm glad I have my 120gig WD JB. The performance is good with the new 60gig/platter drive, but not in all the tests.

The review mentions that its a 60GB/platter design with 3 platters, which would only be 180GB rather than 200GB, and it also goes on to say that it might actually be more than 60GB/platter. It should be aroudn 66.7GB/platter then.

Also, it says that there are 2 versions of the WD1200JB - one with 40GB/platters and another with 60GB/platters, and that the larger density ones are from Sep 2002 onwards, that's like only 1 month ago. Does that mean that all older WD1200JBs are based on the lower density platters and therefore slower?

Don't count your chickens before the eggs hatch!

I've tested both the 180 and 200 GB versions and found them to be a tad slower than the 1200JB and 800JB! :Q

Access times on the new WD's is 1.5 mS slower than the older versions.

I guess it doesn't matter if you're buying these for bulk storage.

Cheers!

The 2000JB isn't worth it for anyone except people that demand the most storage possible.

I'll stick with my 1200JB's. :)

:) pr0n pr0n pr0n :)

Seriously the only thing that really sucks with the bigger and bigger drives is backups are more important.

Just imagine a 6 drive RAID 0 array!!! Crazy performance with 1.2TB of storage that you could never fill up (well maybe with certain A/V files if you know what I mean).

Heck, I'd rather have a 1200JB with a 16MB buffer. Who's the manufacturer that's coming out with a laptop drive that is supposed to have a 16MB buffer? Toshiba?

Toshiba has the laptop drive with a 16MB buffer and 5400rpm. One of the IBM models (GNX?) with a smaller buffer edges it out though.

SCREW THE SPEED! I need more space! I have over 60 gigs of mp3s, hundreds of gigs of movies. 100 gigs of miscelleneous...umm...movies. Excellent quality bitmaps scanned in at 300-400megs each which can be jpeged without loss of quality to just under 100 megs each. 10 pictures - 1GBx entire familty photoalbums and trips etc...hundreds of gigs of pictures. Music videos, ISOs on my FTP. Capturing raw video from TV or VCR...I need more space. 1Terrabyte ought to do it. I don't care about speed.

No matter how big HDs get, I can fill 'em up! One terabyte is good for now, but I'll need A LOT more! I'm REALLY waiting for the terabyte drives to start showing up. :) Space, I need more space! :disgust:

Yes. Space. More space. Need more space. I need a seperate hard drive just for my pictures. Granted they're 100megs each and exceptional quality but still. They're just pictures! not audio, not software, not video...JUST PICTURES! Come one hardware guys! Get us out of this stone age!

Wow....and I'm still trying to fill my 100GB of space. Since I bumped up from 27 (a 20.5 and a 6.5) to my 100 (20.5 and an 80...sold the 6.5), I still have 52 GB free. Probably won't need a new drive for another year or so....but if they get cheap enough, I'll just get a 100GB drive for a backup drive. :)

I remember when 2GB drives were new and people said they'd never fill them. "Pfft...I've still got 3/4ths of my 500meg drive free. I'll never fill that. No one needs that."
Right...
Data Expands to fit the available space.
After all no one will ever need more than 640K!
