New WD Black drive substantially more noisy than my other

Hey everyone:

I just bought an additional WD Black drive. My current one is damn near silent - maybe a little seeking noise every now and then.

However, upon install of my new WD Black drive, I noticed an extremely large amount of vibration/humming coming from the drive.

Basiaclly, if I were to loosen the mounting screws and allow it to move - it will make almost a god aweful grinding noise (caused by it vibrated around the screws). When secured, it makes a very annoying low pitched vibration noise.

I wouldn't notice/care about this so much if it weren't for the fact that my other one is totally silent.

***The quick WD Diag test passed, currently running extended test.***

A few questions:
- If I pass my extended Diagnostic test, am I just SOL? I have to deal with this increasingly annoying vibration sound?
- Is it normal for two identical model hard drives to make substantially different amounts of noise?

Thanks!

Throw a couple of small rubber washers on it and it will be fine. Loud / low grinds are generally the noise being transmitted to the case that then makes noise.

If the drive tests okay then assume that it's fine. Based on my experience also, variation among the same drives can be quite astounding. I have a bunch of Hitachi 2TB units and they all vary somewhat between drives. I remember also that a friend and I went together to Fry's and each bought one of the 2TB drives which were on sale. His turned out to run so quiet and smooth that you couldnt tell it was even spinning (7200rpm too), while my unit was noticeably louder as well as you could feel the difference in vibration between the two drives when holding them when energized. I was jealous.

All those drives were purchased before the flood days and are still running strong to this day.
