New W7 box w/wireless card sees router, no internet

So I built our best friends a new box and installed Windows 7 as the OS.
Their old dead box accessed through a netqueer WGR614v6 wireless router and a wireless card in the box...New box w/W7 shows the router in the network area but there's no internet access.
His work system's network settings in XP Pro show obtain IP and DNS settings automatically both checked...didn't see anything else.

I'm trying to give them a hand but my networking abilities are very limited

Anybody have any simple solutions or ideas on getting their new box internet access?
Their ATT modem is a Speedstream...sorry, no model number.

Are you trying to connect through wire or wireless?

If it through Wireless start first with a wire connection.

Trying through wireless..
If I get him a long enough cable...how would that assist in the setup for the wireless and...how would I procede setting up the wireless after attaching the cable?
I suspect IP and DHCP addies but I know nothing said Sgt Schultz

Disable the Wireless security in the Router and try again with the Wireless.

If it does not work you have to go with wire to insure that every thing is working well on the Computer and its interaction with the Router, and then switch to Wireless.
