New VMWare Server 2 (beta)

I got it installed in an Ubuntu 7.10 host and after using it for about 30 minutes I have to ask why they went to a SLOW web based interface? Maybe have the option to use a web based interface but if this is the only way to run VM's I'll stick with version 1.x or VirtualBox. Also, I hate the layout and the fact that the various tabs and bars take up so much of the 'console' area. I hate to bash a completely free product but I have two words for this new version: steaming pile

Edit: Something else I wanted to add - if I'm using Firefox as my VMWare console interface and the browser crashes... I dunno about everyone else but my FF crashes *frequently* when trying to play embedded video and other flash such stuff.

Yup first product of theirs that I do not like 🙁 /cries. I agree with you on your points and I also wonder why my dual quad core server only shows up at 2x2.0 Ghz processors under summary. The interface is also not as intuitive as the old version. It was pretty easy to find what you wanted to do in 1.0, but for 2.0 beta I had to do some looking around to find what I wanted to do. It does take some of its layout and design from VI3, and it has some nice features like being able to run VMs from a network share. But I think I will try and get ESX running on my server instead of this though.

I'm actually downloading it now to try out. Updated to 1.04 last week and it totally trashed my setup...console can't connect to localhost.

running it now. the WebUI is okay..... but i really miss the client. i may downgrade as well

I just 'upgraded' ( 😉 ) to 1.0.4. Ahhhhh... Back to the console! 🙂

1.0.4 only comes in 32-bit? if the host is 32, can the VMs be 64? i have a copy of server 2008 beta that i want to try out......

I'm not sure. I've never tried that. Maybe try to locate a pre-configured 64-bit VM to experiment with? I know there's plenty of pre-configured stuff out there. I'd try and find one but it's quitting time! 😉 😛 Good luck! 🙂

64 Bit Guests are an option in the drop down box.

You can use the VI client if you want a native windows client, no Linux client though. I haven't used the web UI, so no idea if it is as bad as people say. It is distributed in the Linux server package.
