hey there. just loaded vista business for the first time. very different to what i'm used to(xp)

i noticed the file moving process is SLOW as heck. i was reading a while back on the forums that you can change it so it moves/copies files faster?

if i'm not making sense LMK. this is driving me nuts.. it takes a few minutes(literally) to move a few megs..
 
Get it updated at Windows Update (in your Control Panel now) and see if the updates fix this problem.
 
Yes, make sure you have all the latest performance and reliability updates. Another trick is to disable IPV6 under your network adapter. Some people report this dramatically reduces the "calculating time remaining" issue for them.

UAC is a security feature,recommend you leave it on,however if you must disable it,you only need to type UAC in help section of Vista to get the info below.

Click to open User Accounts.

Click Turn User Account Control on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box to turn on UAC, or clear the check box to turn off UAC, and then click OK.

I second the motion. Leave User Account Control enabled. If it's prompting because you need to assign your account as the Owner of files or directories left over from your previous Windows installation, get that taken care of so it's not a perpetual issue.

 
Once your system is configured, you should rarely, if ever, encounter UAC prompts. Stop thinking of them being annoying and start being happy that MS has taken the smart approach with user access levels.

Also get out of the habit of working directly from /program files, etc. If you need to write to a protected dir all the time, either your software needs to be updated to respect the new security model or you should install it in a regular, user created directory.

I encounter UAC prompts maybe once or twice a month -- to install updates on patch tuesday and to open the reliabilty and performance monitor on occasion. I spend more time using my software to get work done and play games than endlessly 'fiddling' with my PC, causing UAC prompts.

Vista with UAC enabled prompted me TWICE every time I tried to create a new folder or move a file. It asks once with a normal screen, then once again with the dimmed screen. UAC was the very first thing I changed after installing Vista (fresh install).

As for the slow file moving, that sounds like a driver issue. Did you install the latest motherboard drivers? Even the ones downloaded through Windows Update should be good enough to fix IDE/SATA lag problems.

That's not the normal behavior at all, and was probably due to a permissions issue.
 
I'm a bit confused on the UAC stuff..

So it's going to ask every time I install something? Just ran the QW:ET demo and it asked me if it was ok.. I'm guessing this is normal and will do it at least once when I'm installing something for the first time?


I've got the latest drivers for my mobo and vid card.


Also, I installed Vista Business on my HD that previously had XP home on there. I was told that that would be fine. I'm not suffering any performance lost because of not doing a 'fresh' install am I?

As soon as I got into Vista I delted the 'Windows.old' folder or whatever because it was taking 30+GB up. That's ok, right? Hopefully I haven't done anything I shouldn't have🙁

All is fine,yes its safe to delete Windows.old folder.I always run CCleaner especially after new install.

The fact that your filesystem isn't setup correctly doesn't mean there's any problems with UAC.

when you say his filesystem isn't setup correctly, what do you mean?

i've only installed a few programs/games since i installed vista.
 
Use TweakUAC if you can't stand it so much that you want to disable it. Leaves it running in the background without the annoying prompts.

The permissions are setup wrong, his account doesn't have write access to whatever directories he's working with so whenver he tries to do something UAC pops up because he needs admin rights.

Or he has a virus that is triggered every time he creates or moves a file... At least it won't bug him now, though.

Alright. So he just needs to set it to administrator then right?

I looked in user accounts and saw my name(the only account on the pc) was under administrater.
 
Give the necessary permissions to your User group, since Vista's running your stuff with that privilege level even if you're an Administrator.

also, anandtech is running butt slow... didn't when i had xp. hopefully it's just my internet.
 
New question😛

When I first installed Vista the Aero(think it's called that, the 3d alt-tab thing) was working. Now it's not doing it through 3D, just the normal alt-tab way.

any idea why it stopped? Didn't know I turned it off..
 
And Aero is the compositing window manager (or a mode of the generic Vista window manager, not 100% sure right now) not the 3D alt+tab thing, that's just one of the "features".
 
just got a 2gb flashdrive to try the readyboost feature.

it's a memorex.

i plugged it in, went to 'speed up my system' and enabled ready boost. it's setup to use 1790MBs. I hit apply/ok. Is that all I do?
