New Visiontek 4850 PCI-E Running extremely hot

I'm not sure the exact temp as my monitor has not come in but just POST'ing and letting it run for a few minutes (5 minutes) it is extremely hot smells of hot pcb.

Has anyone else come across this on the 4850 series?

Its not unusual for the 4850 to run at 70C and above at idle. It usually stays in 80's under use. Touching the ah heck is scalding. Even the adjoining pci slots on back of my case were hot. The fixes are to either dial up the fan using software or hacks, or to get after market cooler (accelero etc)

Your case temps are a major factor in this as well. I suggest trying Rivatuner at first. I wasn't satisfied with the temps and the noise so I switched my HSF to an Accelero S1 rev.2 and a 1000rpm 12x12 fan on it. The installation was a breeze even for a rookie like me. I was very nervous but everything turned out fine. Load temps are now in the low 50's with hot case temps. First I would still make sure that the card is running fine and has no issues before you potentially go void the warranty =)
EDIT: ...do that by getting Rivatuner and rthdribl to max load and checking out your temepratures. Btw, my Gigabyte 4850 ran 100C load on stock fan speed.

You know the funny thing about these cards is that they seem to make enthusiasts "have" to do something about tweakin' things out.

One step closer to graphics cards that are only sold with water cooling blocks; now wouldn't that just be a stupid marketting thing to do?

I wouldn't be surprised if one day, people's 4850's fans stopped workin' right, or they got louder and louder because of the calculated maximum effiency versus the rate of failure from all this over adjusting stock cooling fans.
