I have received this unverified virus alert:

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft (www.microsoft.com ) and by McAfee (www.mcafee.com ) as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk.

I've been getting this message for months. Just got one again this morning. It's a confirmed hoax.

I remember this one.. last year.. It came in with a bunch of others..

I hate it..Every single one of these supposed virus's is always described as the worst ever or most destructive ever...

heh

they are good for a laugh though.. i usually forward them back to the person that sent it with a note at the top saying "Thanx for the laughs!"

What's "Sector Zero"?
That's a big red flag to me. They could at least use some proper terminology.

you know that bios option "Bios virus protection"? it blocks direct writes to the boot track.

I don't think there ever was a worse virus than DiskFvck. Old school but extremely destructive. Physically damaged your hard drive, and made it unuseable after it struck.

Before you ever distribute unverified viruses, check mcafee or norton's websites, they have all the hoaxes posted on their website pretty quickly after it's initially passed around.

And we all know that Microsoft is big into the virus catching business. Geez, they can't even keep their DNS servers up.

You noticed that they're unreachable again today, as well?

Another good site for checking out hoaxes and urban legends is www.snopes.com . They have a decent search facility.

Had to spend some time over there yesterday - I got another urban legend email from my sister-in-law (sigh)! (The one about the USPS charging 5 cents per email message)

actually its quite possible for someone to create a harddrive failure via a virus. HOwever most expert hackers arent going to destroy stuff. I believe somewhere I had read ( in one of my 100's of computer books here) that its possible.
