New Virus or What?

I was recently asked by a friend for help with a problem on his computer
and I'm sorry to say that I had no cure to offer.
He was reading his email and suddenly a large round black sphere appeared
in the middle of his screen. He shut down and rebooted but it stays there
all the time now, If he boots into safe mode then it's gone. I assume that
this id a virus of some sort but I don't know.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of it?

that's an easy one! it's hybris baby

boot into safe mode...go to start, then run line

type in "sysedit"

then go to system.ini (or perhaps config.sys) and in the first couple lines theres going to be a reference to some REALLY weird thing.exe

delete this line, reboot, and your golden. message me here with the name of the .exe if you're not confident about deleting it.

EDIT: before you delete that line, take note of the name of the .exe file..then scan the hard drive for it and make sure you delete it eventually (i.e. after you remove the line)

Thanks Sohcrates, I'm going back over there tomorrow, and I'll try that out and
let ya know the results and the name.

Many thanks once again for the info. That worked just great.
There was a line in the SYS INI to run a file called alifalif.exe.
That looked pretty stange to me so I deleted that line and then
went and found the file itself in the Windows System folder and
got rid of it and no more problem.
Once again, Thank You!😀😀😀

As a matter of fact, Zone Alarm is already installed on the
machine in question and quite obviously did not stop it.
The only problem that I saw with the installation of Zone Alarm
was that the MailSafe option was not enabled so maybe it came
in with the mail and would have been stopped if that option had
been enabled.
